If you are ingesting it for better health and digestion, there is a good way to do it.
1. Take 2-3 large aloe leaves and cut them into @1x1 in chunks.
2. Put the chunks in a large pot of water and put on stove to boil.
3. Let boil for several minutes. Lower heat in needed so water does not boil over.
4. Take pot off flame and let steep and cool for @ an hour.
5. Take the plant pieces out and throw away. The liquid is what you will drink.
For best use and effects drink about a cup of the aloe "juice" 3 times a day for 5 days in a row. Don't take again for about 2 weeks, then you can repeat.
This is a recipe many women in my family use and swear by. It is good to avoid or shorten colds and flu, and helps digestion. It smells and tastes nasty, but goes down easier if you hold your nose!

Topically, aloe vera gel can be applied repeatedly, especially in the case of burns. Just rub it on the affected area, let it dry, and reapply when needed. Fresh gel from a live leaf is the most potent -- and economical -- form of the herb. If you have an aloe vera plant, cut off several inches from a leaf, then slice the cutting lengthwise. Spread the gel found in the center onto the affected area. For internal use, take aloe vera juice between meals. Another form of aloe, called aloe latex, a yellow extract from the inner leaf, is a powerful laxative and should be used only sparingly under a doctor's care. For internal use: Take one-half to three-quarters of a cup of aloe vera juice three times a day.

I like to buy the real big one (around 2 feet in length and the bottom is about 5 - 6 inches in width and about 1/2 inch thick) to make salad or put into my smoothies.
1) buy big thick leaves of aloe vera (I can find them in supermarket here in Hong Kong having a label says they are imported from USA)
2) cut the edges of both sides, cut the leave into 3 inches horizontally and use your knife to peel the greens "skin" (the green thick skin is bitter)
3) Dice the jelly-like aloe vera in to small cubes
This aloe vera jelly is almost tasteless, so you can serve it with green salad or mix fruit salad or put it in your pudding or any fresh fruit juices. I can eat it raw like eating jelly.
Rub your feet or hands for about 5 minutes with the green peel (still have some jelly sticking on there, it is very good for your skin too
