I like to give presents that either show some thought or are completely out of the norm - eg.. Buying a swim with the sharks ticket at the aquarium, skydiving or a comedy bus tour etc... the thoughtful ones well that will really depend on the person you are buying for - years ago I dated a blind guy and I bought him a dictaphone tape recorder so he could tape his notes and memos etc (this was before the day of our current technology so back then it was something nobody had thought to give him before)
In your situation where you are so far away - you could take the long drive over to her and surprise her or buy her a makeover over the phone (somewhere in her area) and put on the card I wish I could be with you on your special day but as I cant please go and pamper yourself - this is what I would do if I could be with you.

Not a lady, but I want you to consider some things....
Who is your girlfriend? What are her interests? Sports? Hiking? Camping? Drugs? Hard Core Punk Rock?
This is the type of questions you should be asking yourself, and probing your lady for answers.
The best gifts are the ones that people want but would never buy for themselves.

Simple is sweeter. Like a silver heart necklace. Or a small silk flower arrangement in a pretty glass vase (not too big). How about sending her music that you both listen too, so that she can be reminded of you every time she plays it? You can go to a store where they personalize a bear or puppy, and send it to her, with her & your name on a bandanna around its neck. You can also send her a recent photo of yourself, in a special frame, so that she has something to look at. Anything that reminds her of you and her together will be something that she'll cherish forever. <*)))><

Just buy her favorite CD and send her a rose alone with a nice card saying that you love her or some other mushy stuff.

get in touch with her bestfriend that is where she is. have her take your girl on a date that's on you. fancy restaurant, etc. she will have a great time with her friend and it is a very thoughtful gift to make her smile instead of making her wish you were closer.
