let it sniff the back of your hand if it licks your hand then you may pet it...lol seriously store is usually the safest,, if im unsure about a seasoning or ingredient im sing i dont use it,,i buy some fresh ingredient

ON a more serious note... mustard seed in the store IS fine... if you have any question about stuff YOU are raising then check your seed package for edibility acceptance.
