Is there any name or phrase that could be applied to a boy in Japanese that denotes he is a "light in the darkness" or something similar to this. Perhaps "guiding light" or an equivalent?

Anything more classic "Sengoku Period" language is more desireable.

光 is the character which means "light" and it is read "kou" and "mitsu".
光太郎ko-taro is very bright name.(taro means a first boy) Only光太kouta sounds more casual. It's a popular name.
If you use this character to be called "mitsu", you have a lot of combination to make samurai-like name.
I just googled and found 150 names consist of two characters when I put 光 at first.
光成mitsunari
光秀mitsuhide
光明mitsuaki
These are the ones sounds very sengoku samurai names.
I can't think of a name (when it sounds like a name) that can mean light in the darkness, sorry.
So as guiding light...maybe using the character of "star"星will do? 星輝seiki=star+shining 光星kousei=light+star
Anyway, it always looks happier than you may want.. Next time, try only phrase or word.
