I have been in and out of church most of my life, on my own. Not with my family as they don't go. I have also read tons of books in addition to the bible. I have prayed. I have talked to religious counselors. I have tried to live right. I talk to God as if he's sitting next to me all the time!

Without slamming with biblical references...can anyone offer me some advice here?

You can talk to God as if he's sitting right next to you, but I don't believe you can physically "feel" the holy spirit. Believing in God takes a certain amount of faith, but believing in the infallibility of the Bible and proving that point give you concrete evidence. The holy spirit is not something that you just feel. You do not have to go to church to feel the holy spirit either.
I am not a christian but i will tell you this. You have to put yourself into a certain trend of thought. When you are praying sink yourself, let your concentration be only on what you are doing at the time.
Allow your self to go to another place.
When the time is right your manifestation of the holy spirit will be one that everyone knows you have felt.
But do not place all your energy on it. Chances are you have felt it and didn't even realize it because you were looking for something else. Something major perhaps. It comes to everyone in different ways. As it will come to you in a different way.
Be patient and more reverent.

If you are open to exploring new options you could perhaps find someone who is Pentecostal or just go on your own to one. I went when I was younger with one of my friends, I have been christian all my life but I also believe that no religion based on God is wrong. So I went with her, it helped to have her as I didn't know that you had to wear a skirt. At first it was difficult to feel comfortable, this religion is very much based on just praising the lord with no worry of what others are thinking. So I saw a lot of people just dancing and worshiping. Once I relaxed, it was nice they called up whoever wanted to receive the holy spirit. I went up, they were all speaking in tongues, this was the first time I had heard someone speak in tongues. I ended up being able to receive the holy spirit that day, I think it was because for the first time in my life I asked God to receive the holy spirit out loud in front of everyone without worrying what anyone thought which was difficult for me. I spoke in tongues with great ease all of a sudden my language just changed, I felt wonderful. A lot of people looked at me weird when I came home and was just elated, so I never went back as I was young. Recently, I got a new neighbor that is a wonderful christian woman and told her this story. She was not one bit surprised nor did she discriminate against the religion like a lot of people I know do. She said that it was tongue and it is the purest form of language and to speak to the lord. I admit that I don't go to church often and don't read the bible very much and for someone that doesn't do many of these things, I was very surprised that the holy spirit came to me so easily. I too have been in and out of church most of my life. So, if you are looking to feel closer or more connected to the lord, you could try going to a Pentecostal church. Hope this has helped you. God bless.

Holy Spirit refers to Angel Gabriel in Islam. Only prophets could feel and communicate with him, therefore normal people like you and me cannot feel him.

If Christianity does not bring you closer to God, why don't you try Islam? It's the purest religion that is not corrupted by mankind. The true religion of Abraham!

You feel him in your soul. When I've felt the Holy Spirit, it's like being filled with love.

Jesus said, "seek the kingdom-within you"
Pray to him to reveal the "light of truth" to you.
Then stand still and wait upon him.
