Yes, forgo the huge party for the wee babe, and have a nice dinner for him with all the loving grandparents, aunts and uncles. Dress him up in a baby suit and tie, and get plenty of pictures with the loved ones. He won't remember clowns or face painting, but years ahead he will look at those pictures and know that he was truely loved and wanted by all those there. You know, one day they won't be there, maybe before the child is old enough to remember them. Do yourself a favor and make it a family day. Next year the two year olds will love a person in a animal costume, and clowns are scary till they are about 8. Good luck.

hiring a party planner for a first birthday party is a little over the top. Its very easy to plan one. Keep it simple and remember who your audience is. A face painter will probably scare the kids and therefore be a waste of time and money.
Here is a webpage to plan it. It makes it easy.

You could have maybe a family member or a friend do the face painting, they would still be able to enjoy the party too.

honestly? it is the kid's first birthday and he will not remember it. how about just dinner and a cake, a few decorations and a few family members? just make sure to take tons of pictures. and if you must you can do the face painting yourself, or perhaps you have an artistically inclined neice or nephew? and if you decide to have any games, you are probably going to have to make him the object of the game, since he is probably far too small to participate....

best advice would be hire a party planner, or check your local phone book or internet. if you search under clowns or something of the sort they should be able to refer you to a company that would do face painting.
good luck
