My son had it VERY BAD....He has been taking accutane for over a year now but had great results when the Dr. added prednisone...Go see a dermatologist...We are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel now but its been a rough road...Sooner is better than later though as with my son he will need a plastic surgeon to fix one of his scars...Good Luck!
We did try Proactive for 3 months first with no improvement..Sometimes I think its just an internal thing....He didn't have acne, just huge cysts...one or 2 at a time..on his face only....Poor kid.

See a dermatologist. If you do have cystic acne, there are medications you can go on that will clear up your skin. Antibiotics, topical gels and creams (by prescription only).
It's really worth it. If the stuff you buy in the drug store doesn't work for your skin---it's time to get a prescription.

Believe it or not but PROACTIVE really works. I know you may see it on tv and think that it cant help you but trust me It works wonders. Im not gonna say its cheap but it is worth it. Try it and if you dont like it you never have you use it again. But it is impotant that if you do use it that you continue to use it because some of your acne that when away will return and you dont want that to happen ..

A dermatologist can recommend something. I have had it and he recommended a combination of an antibiotic and a topical cream.

Treatment Regimen For Moderate Acne
If a large portion of face or any other area get affected with whiteheads, blackheads, pustules and papules, it may be termed as moderate to severely moderate acne. You should preferably consult a dermatologist to treat this kind of acne. If this kind of acne persists, it can cause scars. Scars can be of two types- pockmarks or pits or raised thick tissue. To prevent the formation of scars and to prevent acne getting further inflamed, consult your doctor as soon as such acne appears. Don't let acne grow to severe form so that scars can be prevented.
To treat moderate to severely moderate acne, your doctor may adopt different treatments. One choice may be physical treatment. Your doctor may remove the comedones physically or give blue light to treat acne. This physical treatment may be combined with topical application or oral medication. Oral medication for acne treatment may include use of antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, oral isotretinoin or any other medicine your doctor feels suitable. The choice will depend upon the severity of acne and your skin. Your doctor may also prescribe topical medication that may include antimicrobials, retinoids and OTC medications. Women may be prescribed oral contraceptives to treat acne.
Treatment Regimen For Severe Acne
In severe form of acne, you may have nodules and cysts that are all inflamed. Treating this acne takes more time and patience. Your doctor will treat you with combination therapy to control and cure the acne while trying to take care that minimum scars form. The treatment regimen for severe acne may include physical as well as oral and topical treatments. The options may include- isotretinoin, oral antibiotics, oral contraceptives for female patients, injecting corticosteroid in the lesions and surgical procedure. Let us find out more about these.
Isotretinoin:
Isotretinoin is one of the most potent treatments for severe form of acne which has not responded well to other therapies. Isotretinoin is a retinoid which is a form of vitamin A. Isotretinoin helps treat all the four reasons of acne formation:
a. Excess oil,
b. Clogged pores,
c. Inflammation, and
d. The bacteria p.acnes.
The normal course of isotretinoin is one or two pills a day for up to twenty weeks. Your dermatologist will decide the dose. Don't take Isotretinoin without medical supervision.
Side Effects Of Isotretinoin:
For women, it is very important to be in constant contact with their doctor because isotretinoin can cause damage to development of fetus. It cannot be given during pregnancy and before the treatment begins, all possibilities of pregnancy have to be eliminated. Talk to your doctor in detail about this and follow his/her instructions very strictly. The other side-effects of isotretinoin may include joint pains, headaches, nausea, depression and others. You must not miss your appointment with your doctor while taking isotretinoin.
Oral Antibiotics:
Broad spectrum antibiotics can reduce the bacteria p.acnes substantially. With reduction in the population of this bacterium, inflammation reduces. The antibiotic may include drugs such as - tetracycline, erythromycin, doxycycline, etc.
Oral Contraceptives For Female Patients:
Overactive sebaceous glands produce more sebum and are one of the main causes of acne. Some oral contraceptives can reduce the production of excessive sebum. These drugs should be taken only under medical supervision. Sometimes, you may have to consult the gynaecologist, for which your doctor will advise you.
Injecting Corticosteroid In The Lesion:
In this treatment, a mild steroid is injected in the cyst. The steroid reduces the acne substantially within a few days. This treatment also prevents scarring as it reduces the possibility of bursting of a cyst and dries it totally.
Surgical Procedure:
Your doctor may find it necessary to cut open the acne and drain it. This procedure needs skill and patients should not try this themselves.
