If she breaks the engagement she should return the ring - the ring is a promise to marry - you break the promise you return the jewlery.
If on the other hand he breaks off the engagement she should keep the ring.
I know several girls who have broken the engagement and kept the ring and I think terrible of all of them - even the ones that are my friends and family, it is just not right. That to me proves the person to be a gold digger!

She gives the ring back and, I think he can sue her if she doesn't. The engagement ring is part of the marriage commitment. If the marriage doesn't happen the contract is not fulfilled. If the ring is a "first promise" or a "gift" she can keep it.
She definitely gives it back if she breaks it off. If she tries to keep it she's a creep. If he tries to give the same ring to another girl he's a creep and they should get back together and save two other people from making the mistake of being with them, they are a perfect pair.

If she is the one breaking the engagement, she should return the ring.
In some states, he has the legal right to the ring, as it was a gift given as part of a "contract" to marry. By ending the engagement, she breaks the contract and therefore the whole deal is off and he gets his "investment" back. Sounds cold, but considering how much some rings cost nowadays... *shrug*

Technically, she CAN keep it, because it is a gift from him to her. Therefore, it is hers, whether she breaks off the engagement or not.
However, many people feel uncomfortable wearing an engagement ring given to them by someone they are no longer engaged to.
I would say that while it is acceptable to keep the ring, it's in good form to give it back.

You give it back. No questions asked. An engagement ring is a promise ring that you will take their heart in marriage. Since you are no longer getting married there is no use in keeping their heart.

Really that depends. Some might look at it as a gift and once given, it is the recipient's to keep no matter what. I think in most cases though, it would be appropriate to return the ring...sometimes the guy may refuse to take it back, due to my first state - that it is a gift. Sometimes, though, say if the reason she broke it off is because he did something horribly wrong, I think it's her right to keep it.

It is proper for the girl to return the ring. The man proposed and gave the ring for intentions of marriage, if no marriage was bonded, then the girl must give it back. Otherwise, its considered moraly discusting.
