Colleges generally offer certificates of mastery or Associate's degrees - and some certifications such as in nursing or child care.

Universities offer bachelor's or master's degrees.

Trust me, I know. I graduated from the Oklahoma City Community College (with an Associate's degree). I am now attending Southwestern Oklahoma State University (going for a bachelor's).

A university is made up of multiple colleges but not all colleges are part of a university. Colleges are usually smaller such as a community college.

What I find confusing in California is that there is the University of California (UCLA, etc) and there is California State University (Chico, etc.)

A university is bigger than a college in terms of staff, students, govermnet grants, research facilities and chicks.

Well both could give you a degree.

I went to a college under scholarship and now i'm emlployed like any other uni grad.

Seriuously, you get to party more in a bigger campus.

College grads are different, they study less.

in the US, a "univeristy" is made up of many colleges. a college generally has one particular focus, or offers related majors. honestly, though, this technicality in terming is becoming more vague and blurred. it's becoming more about what sounds cooler or more professional. as someone answered above me, many colleges are calling themselves "universities." the name is losing its distinction. no wonder you are confused.

in australia, "college" is high school and "university" is the term for all post-secondary education. (just thought I'd add that as a fun, useless fact)
