The theory test for driving licence has this as a question. The correct answer is you should reduce your speed and if possible pull over when it is safe to do so to let the vehicle past.

Reducing your speed will help minimise the chances of an accident if there's an incident or hazard ahead of you. It gives you more time to react, slow and brake and hopefully avoid getting rear ended.

Slow a little and pay extra attention to the road ahead - don't let them divert all your attention as it endangers you too!

The worst thing you could do is to follow the advice of Bad Drivers: tap brakelights, slam on the brakes, slow down, stay the same speed, etc.

The proper thing to do is to safely move over to the next available lane and let the speeder pass.

The best way is to frequently check your rear view mirror for speeders before they come up right behind you. Bad drivers hardly check their rear mirrors because they just that, bad drivers. Then they never see the speeder until the speeder is driving right behind them, then they respond like bad drivers.
Bad drivers frequently loiter in the passing lane oblivious to all traffic, ahead and behind. Bad drivers are often talking on cellphones, reading, putting on make-up, and even speeding.

A good driver frequently scans the road ahead as well as behind using mirrors. If you check your mirrors every 10-15 secs you will spot the speeder long before they come right up behind you, and do the proper thing, move over. Act like a professional race car driver, scan the entire road in front and in back.

Statistically speaking, all speeders eventually get caught. Bad drivers get caught too, accidents and fights are their penalty. Why risk your life for a few seconds of "king of the road", "I'm in front of you" childishness? Bad drivers need to grow up.

Neo has a point. The tailgater is creating a hazardous condition and it is your job to remove the hazard. sometimes changing lanes is the best thing, even if you move to the left. Let the idiot pass and then drive in the lane of your choice. It is usuually a man in an SUV who feels more powerful and more important than you who commits this act of stupidity.

Hello,

On those cars where the rear fog lights are in the same housing as the rear/brake lights, you can play with switching on the fog lights when you fell that the one behind you is too close. Those who don't know this or don't expect it will think you are braking and involuntarily will slow, but since you don't, some distance will build up behind you.
Or you can install a little switch for the brake ligths and flash it. When the guy behind you doesn't get the point after the 'fake light', step on the brake to make him/her understand what you meant, but not too rude ;D

It can be a really annoying feeling indeed, when, especially on slippery conditions, the other car goes right in your tail.
But don't play with this without a good reason !

Regards

Just slow down, don't speed up as it's something the Police have been known to do in unmarked cars on a slow day to get people driving faster so they can nick them for speeding!

Never stop though, just slow down until they either drop back or overtake.

put an old camera (visible) on the parcel shelf pointing backwards and print some police literature from their websites and make sure its visible. I had an old inspectors hat from a fancy dress outfit and once left it on the rear parcel shelf for a motorway journey - every car kept well back and overtook me so timidly. If I experience this now I just slow gently down to about 40mph (on a motorway) or 20mph (in town) and let them overtake on their way to an early grave - then speed back up once they are out of site

If you are in the left lane, move to the right so they can pass. If you are in the right lane slow down to encourage them to pass. From what I hear they don't have this problem in Germany because the faster car has the right away and people let them by.

When someone is tailgating in the left lane they are trying to communicate with you. The left lane talegatee is just as much of an asss as the talegator.

I have discovered two methods. First of course would be the "brake check" to let them know I'm not in the mood for games!
Secondly, you can adjust your rear view mirror or side view mirror so their head lights reflect back in their windshield making it impossible to stay there! Of course this only applies to night time driving.
If neither of the above is sucessful, I usually slam on the brakes and jump out of the car like a raving maniac just to instill fear in them and they usually will take the next turn to get away from me!
