I usually listen to hard rock and I have a Pioneer A109 amplifier (2x40W 8Ohm). My room is 12' wide and 20' long

Check out Paradigm Atoms or Titans
If you can use a sub woofer go with the Orb Audios great speaker.

With the caliber receiver you have, I would stick with mid-level or vintage speakers. Check out some small Cerwin Vegas or some old Acoustic Research AR4x's. Why would you want to spend a lot of money on speakers that are just going to point out the limitations of your receiver?

that's an interesting question. the "best"? is price relevant? I can come up with a huge list of cost-no-object high end bookshelf speakers that cost more than a very nice used car.

How about best bang for the buck under $200 or under $500?
