Why is Diesel cheaper than gas in Canada and more expensive in the Western US?

My assumption is that Diesel personal auto use is similar between the US and Canada - can't be "supply and demand"

There are a number of factors that effect the price of gas and diesel. Supply and demand is obviously the biggest factor in the price of fuel, with differing tax rates being the second largest. Inherently, though, it is less expensive to refine diesel fuel (all other things being equal).

It can be supply and demand. There is a shortage of refineries. As refineries get squeezed, there is more competition for which fuel to make. There are many more gasoline cars so as diesel refining drops to make room for gasoline, diesel becomes shorter in supply and the price goes up.

Like Cheryl said in northern Ontario right now deisel is selling about five cents a litre more than regular gas. For years it was always cheaper I think because it is a lot easier to produce but haven't got the foggiest idea why it is so expensive now.

diesel in the states have more taxes associated with it because it is a 'dirty' fuel. Taxes are used for air monitoring, to deter the use of this fuel source etc. Diesel burns dirtier, so pollutes more.
