I have been adopted by three cats over the years. I have never "kept" them nor fed them but they still come to me for affection.
Cats are notoriously stand-offish, what am I doing right?

Cats are often attracted to people simply by scent; cats do not (as a rule) even recognize people by seeing their face. Cats are also likely to approach people who make eye contact with them, which is something they CAN perceive.

Oh confident and deservedly so. you want to sense what it is going to likely be like while the inter-stellar extraterrestrial beings arrive, get a cat. No. A cat has no style for human flesh until in a intense state of deprivation. A canine will start up on you in a deep sleep.

Cats think they are god. Well somewhere along those lines.

So they come to you for your affection. Naturally. You need not do anything.

The "stand-offish" ones are lesser exposed to humans. Once they start getting any special treatment though, or get used to human contact, they will become attracted to the attention they can get from humans.

You don't smell like fish by any chance do you?

OK read this and it will give you the answer you are looking for.

Take cold chicken and stars soup straight from the can and splash it across the carpet and the foot of the bed and then walk in it in the dark with your socks on. Set up a mouse trap at the foot of the bed each night so that if you move a toe one inch while you are sleeping, you are sure to get snapped. Cover all your best suits with cat hair. Dark suits must use white hair, and light suits must use dark hair. Also, float some hair in your first cup of coffee in the morning. Put every cat-size-toy into a water bowl to marinate. Practice cutting your chicken into teeny tiny bites so that when the cat steals from your plate, he won't take the whole breast. Tip over a basket of clean laundry, and scatter clothing all over the floor. Leave your underwear on the living room floor, because that's where the cat will drag it anyway (especially when you have company). Jump out of your chair shortly before the end of your favorite TV program and run to the TV, shouting "No! No! Don't chew on the electric cord!" Miss the end of the program. Put chocolate pudding on the carpet in the corner of the living room in the morning and don't try to clean it up until you return from work that evening. Gouge the surface of the dining room table several times with an X-acto knife. It's going to get scratched anyway. Practice searching every closet and open cabinet door before you shut it. Knock all small items off your kitchen counter. Chew the eraser off every pencil in the house. Take a fork and shred the roll of toilet paper while it's still hanging up. Pull a few sheets off and scatter them around the bathroom. Take a staple remover and punch two holes in every scrap of paper around the house. Get a litter tray without a lid and mix in some tootsie rolls with cat litter and then tip it over right before the company comes. Make sure your guests get to find this before you do. Buy a mixed bag of cat toys and stuff them under the refrigerator. Practice getting up at 2AM and fishing them out with a ruler or broom stick. Take a warm cuddly blanket out of the dryer and immediately wrap it around yourself. This is the feeling you will get when your new cat falls asleep on your lap. There now, once you've done all these, you've passed the test, and are ready to take on that little furry critter!

Cats like all animals sense love and compassion, first feed the cat daily with fresh water, inside cat= litter box! brush it daily, just a little bit of time with the cat will bring alot of happiness to the cat, and you may enjoy it also!

Do you mean someone else feeds them? Because I hope they're being fed.....

Anyways, I've noticed that cats tend to like people more when they're left alone. Ever noticed that they absolutely hate children who run to them and pick them up all the time, yet constantly harrass the one person in the room who isn't a cat person? Lol....they're funny buggers like that.

cats have a "sixth sense" about them. If they come to you for affection, it's 1 of 2 reasons

1) you seem to understand them and you know how to pet them gently

2) you are ill, and they sense that. when both of my teen kids were very ill, my cats would sit by them, and not leave their side
after they got well, my cats wouldn't pay too much attention to them

hope this helps

They are probably looking for a human owner to take care of them and love. Some of them are more affectionate than others and like human contact. They might make good pets if you let them.

They look for someone who knows what to do.....probally they are waiting on you to figure this out. When you do it will be well worth the wait. The way I look at it is that cats look for you not people looking for cats. They are much smarter than we give them credit for.
