sit, stay, come & down are obedience commands, not 'tricks'.

Also search "dog tricks" you'll get a bunch of info.

Repetiton and rewards. We used popcorn and our dog, Bud, a Sheltie, does all kinds of tricks. He sits, shakes, (only we say, "give me five") rolls over, plays dead. He can count to four. You say, "put your head down" and he rests it where you point. He rings a bell by the door if we don't see him asking to go out. He goes to the neighors and barks till she lets him in. When we take him for a walk and a car is coming he automatically sits till it passes. That was repetition not popcorn. Granted he is an extremely smart dog but the popcorn was the key. He loves the stuff. We eat the light butter and the vet said it was fine to use in moderation.

Brake the trick into a small series of tricks. Also work on the trick in short intervals through out the day. Repetition repetition repetition. My mother has taught her dog to shut the door behind him, to get her purse--all sorts of silly stuff. She just has patience and likes to work with the dog.

do the basics first.. the first thing the dog needs to learn is its name - formal Obedience lessons stimulate the part of the mind needed for further trick training so start there - pick reward based lessons - gone are the days when you jerked on their neck and pushed on their bum to get them to sit - its all reward now

try using the clicker method-whenever ur dog does something cool-click and give a treat. try to get ur dog to repeat that. then put a command with an action. it quite simple-just dont forget to reward
