There is no food potential in it...

i've read that apparently it has health benefits!
*relaxing
*quick breath freshener when toothbrush is at home
*aids with digestion and that sluggish feeling after a heavy meal (but only to be chewed for an hour or so after the meal to get the full benefits).
*can curb hunger pangs but if chewed for long hours can make you hungry!
perhaps there's more?

People chew to pass time, to get fresh breath quickly, some even help you clean your teeth for people who dont have time. And since the chewing motion can act as a lacitive, people can chew to help them you know...

Apart from that its probably good to chew after eating big meals etc just to stay fresh :D!

I stopped smoking in January and found that chewing gum helped, it also stops me from eating too much. I always chew sugar-free gum.

Because when people are given instructions they must obey them! Chewing gum demands to be chewed!

I chew it because i like fresh breath and the extra (blue one light blue) one that i use gives me that feeling plus when i want chocolate or something at work i chew gum instead. it doesn't always work but it is handy and keeps you awake when you get a little bored! :-)

Not to be disrepectful, but I have no idea why anyone would. It's disgusting to hear and people who chew with their mouths open look stupid. In a work environment, it is EXTREMELY unprofessional (I would not hire anyone who entered an interview with gum in their mouth). There's lots of good, less annoying alternatives to freshen breath and stave off hunger.

I once saw myself chewing gum in a video and have never chewed gum again. And I wasn't even chewing with my mouth opened. All I can say is, it's the most unbecoming, cow-chewing-cud, habit ever! Anyone who sees what they look like doing it will switch to breath mints.
