While its not actually true -- think of your brain as a muscle. To keep it strong (sharp) it needs to be constantly used.

The best way to keep it sharp is to practice critical thinking and problem solving.

Some people are fortunate enough to have this at school or at work to keep their brain sharp, but many people are not challenged, and because of this their brain starts to lose it's edge.

Also, to be able to communicate well -- and bring use out of increased intelligence -- you need to keep up a broad vocabulary. This can be achieved by reading a wide array of sources, which means you need to read a lot, and not just one type of medium. Read some non-fiction books, some fiction novels (both old and new), some magazines (on anything, although you may want to stay away from "Pop Magazines"), news articles, and even internet based media from educated people (like some good Blogs). This gives you a wider input range for your vocabulary.

One activity that will hone all of these skills is crossword puzzles. You have to find them fun to play, however, which I really do not. =\

I really enjoy doing Sudoku when I get a free moment, though. Sudoku, and other number puzzles, can help you sharpen up your problem solving skills in alternate ways from just doing math (which as an Engineering Student I do quite enough of as it is.)

You can sharpen your critical thinking skills by just taking time to fully answer questions right here on Yahoo Answers! Just find really good questions and really take a good amount of time to do some reasearch and fully answer the question! The longer spend answering a question the more you will be critically thinking -- giving your brain a little workout!

There are tons of ideas, why don't you critically think of some ways to critically think and practice your problem solving skills =)

your brain is like a muscle.
Therefore working out will make it easier to retain information and also to learn new things faster.
The more you learn the more you will be likely to learn!

How to do this. Studying. Anything and everything.
The more hours you put in working at your brain "muscle" the more capable it will be.

Food is also important. Your diet of fresh vegetable and fruits will help. Drinking a lot of water helps the brain work. Sleep also helps the brain to store and work out what you have learned.

Therefore;
Sleep
Diet
Water
mental exercises/ studying/ learning

are key!

Good luck!

Your brain will grow from stimulation. The more you learn, the smarter you will be, and if you continue to learn new things throughout your life, you may be able to offset Alzheimer's disease. The best bonus is that you will be a great person to be around due to your knowledge of a variety of things.
