Aren't there enough to go around, to suitable parents? Why is it such a big deal to adopt a kid from places like Africa?

Ever heard of the words...out of the frying pan, into the fire?

Adoption is a big deal because, years ago, adoptions were an easy thing...however so many adoptee families ended up being abusive, slavery type thing or had great difficulties adjusting to the childrens behavioural problems. You have to remember that those kids have usually been through great emotional trauma or have disabilities due to their circumstances (physical and mental) AND that 40% of people in that country (including kids) that have AIDs.

Governments of any adoptive parents have political responsibility...that they dont increase the Aids or otherwise disabled population to their OWN country (public health plus cost) AND that the parents will be stable people, able to cope with a disturbed child.

Most normal families struggle a little to raise healthy children in a good unabusive environment. You add culture clash, not meeting the child beforehand (so no pre-bonding...unless the family is rich enough to go pick a child)...then you have unbelievable drawbacks. Sounds easy...but its not.

Would you really like children to go to families that might exploit a child.....and damage it even more than has already been done? Or would you rather the govt be as careful as possible in trying to link GOOD psychologically prepared parents with children? If the latter is the case....then its going to be hard to adopt a child from Africa.

Why adopt from another country when we have plenty of our own children that need adoptive parents? Are you trying to adopt a child or a baby? If you are trying for a baby so is everyone else. Why not adopt a child of 4 or 5 but why stop there there are teens just waiting for a good home.

It isn't hard at all to adopt a child, orphan or not.

If you want an infant, and a perfect and healthy one at that, then you are looking at an expensive, time-consuming and competitive event.

If you are looking to adopt an older child, siblings, a handicapped or special needs child, a child with AIDS and so forth, you are only looking at a wait of a few months at most.

If it wasn't made this difficult, who knows what kind of people they would be giving these children to - after the lives they have lived so far, I think it is good for the screening process to be as difficult and evasive as it is.

They are only looking for the very best for these children and want nothing more than to see them in good homes, however they must be certain that is where they are being sent. Making certain the prospective parents can afford another member of the family as well as background checks and home visits.....

Difficult as it would be to be patient awaiting families.... it is best to remember that it is in the best interest of the child.

Best of luck

That's the best question i've heard yet. What else does this child have to lose? It's better to stay an orphan because she/he's not married or rich? Half of the children on the planet only have one parent. I agree with you.

The process of adoption is difficult, and very expensive. I know exactly what you mean.
There are so many children who need homes, and so many people who would love to have a child. They should work on changing the system. It should not be determined by who has $10,000-$20,000 to pay the fees to adopt. It should be based on who has a lot of love to give.

The relevancy of where a child in need of a home comes from shouldn't be important. But celebrities glamorize adoptions from over seas, when it would be nice to see a celebrity adopt a child in foster care right here in the good ol' USA. There are 1000's of children in need of good homes right under our noses, trust me, I know this, and I agree with you.

Because the people there are very poor and the are dying at an alarming rate, especially due to AIDS. Here (in the US), orphans with AIDS are being used as test subjects because they without any parental support.

Actually in america there aren't that many orphans. And the ones that are out there tend to have disabilities, especially if they are younger. There are a lot of foster children but not that many true orphans.
