I bought my house 5 months ago and I'm still getting the previous owners mail. Postal guy won't pick it back up. I have their new address on my paper work. Wondering if I should try doing thier change of address for them.

As a child of two postmasters, and a grandchild of a postmaster let me tell you the law on this one ok. You must return the mail to the proper post office, you must write on the letter or packages, wrong address. They have to keep it in thier office 15 days before they can send it back UNLESS they have left a forewarding address. It is NOT up to you to change the address and it is illegal to do so.

I don't think you can change someone else's address for them - I just recently changed by address over the internet and by using the form you deliver to the post office - both required me to present/prove my id... unless you just drop one in the mailbox. But I tried that and my change of address didn't go through and my mail didn't get forwarded.

You have a few options I think...

Consider taking the mail back to the actual Post Office if the carrier won't do their job.

Consider going to the Post Office to fill out a form - the form isn't a change of address, it's more like a Who's Living At This Address form - that way they should only deliver your mail to the address you live at.

You go directly to the post office and turn over the mail that isn't yours...Tell them YOU are the new owner. They are suppose to STOP delivering it to you then.

Write the previous own a note and tell them to contact the post office so their mail gets redirected... Hit the source head on !

Just send them a note saying they need to change their address and the little form.

And/or bundle their mail and write "Forward to (address)" or "Return to Sender" on it. The mailman has to pick it up.

you cannot do this without the other parties permission. you must sign the change of address form, and it clearly states that you are permissable to change the address. keep sending it back to the post office as "not at this address".

If I get mail that doesn't belong at my house I write "Not at this address" put it back in there. Our mailman always takes it back.

I don't think that is illegal. You could go to the post office and tell them that the previous owner no longer lives there and they should stop it from coming.

YES IT IS ILLEGAL, DON'T DO IT. PUT "RETURN TO SENDER" ON THE MAIL AND MAIL MAN WILL HAVE TO TAKE IT.
