I work with a brilliant moslem surgeon and it seems like he's lost a few pounds since fasting. Does everyone lose weight during Ramadan? I think I would make up for the lunch I missed at dinner and replace all those calories before going to bed!! LOL

Ridds ridd: Why don't you check a dictionary before making a fool of yourself. There are two EQUALLY correct ways to spell moslem.
aa mohamm: Please reread my question. I'm not suggesting that moslems fast to lose weight. What's funny is how you could have possibly thought that I meant it that way.

the Purpose of fasting is not to lose weight... It is rather spirtual.
we fast so we feel the hunger that the poor and the needy people feel. We thank God for providing us with food and we thank Him for all his blessings.
It is a Holy month. Thus, we give charity to all who need. We pray a lot and ask the forgiveness of God .
In this month, people get close to God hoping they would be saved grom Hell.
There is also a night that is called ( Laylat Al Qader) in which the angels including Gabriel descend to the earth and so when you pray , God will answer your prayer..
It is said that your prayer will be answered before the next Ramadan comes. That's why all Muslims pray alot especially in the last 10 days of Ramadan .
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that "Laylat AL Qader" will be on the 21th or 23th or25th or 27th or 29th , anyway, some think it is the 27th .
There are certain signs that lead us to know which night it probably is.

After reading your question again (LOL)
I actually gain weight cuz my sister is a good cook and I like sweets .

the weight debate differs between each individual but i find personally i dont tend to gain weight or lose a significant amount, i kind of just stay in the middle during the whole Ramadan. I guess it comes from a fast metabolism normally & during Ramadan most of my intake is water or drinks in comparison to how much food i end up eating.
Dispite many people losing alot of weight or gaining alot, this month is truely a beautiful time & your body just adjusts naturally to the fasting. Also thank you for asking your question with respect, its unbeliveable the way most people on this site trash Muslims, so its nice to see somebody who is genuinly curious about part of the religion and asking nicely.

Depriving you body of its regular food intake will naturally shrink it because it rests the digestive system's process of digestion and metabolism.

The good part of fasting is it allows the body to purify during the day and make it ready to assimilate new food in the evening when the one fasting eats his full measure of the meal. New cells replace the ones that are dead during the day. While at rest in the evening, the body again replaces old and dead cells. So there are two processes of cell replacements to new and fresh ones.
