Ya know... fat people have a million excuses for why they're fat, why they should be allowed to be fat, why they can't become thin, blah, blah, blah. I suppose I should feel sorry for them, except there's one thing I can't work out...
I've never seen an overweight marathon runner.
Get your fat arses off the couch and start pounding the pavement. Then you can eat whatever the hell you want to.
Problem solved.

There are many reasons actually. Addiction is hard to beat and sometimes you need help. Another big one is they do not want to stop. Many people ( not just fat ) live in a semi-depressed state without knowing it. They go back and forth from feeling good to feeling bad. Food can become a 'comfort' to many and those folks are not willing to give this up. I think the first step is to decide that you want to change your life and will do anything to get there. I could go on and on but your psychological template got formed at home. You could have been overindulged, over disciplined , undervalued and all these things may have dirven someone to invest themselves emotionally into food. It is not as simple as getting off your butt and doing something. There has to be tremendous commitment.
OK, take it easy.

Look here, I am fat and I have always played sports and used to eat less than most people - possibly less than you. I would eat small meals cause that's how we ate in my house, and I was fat. I played soccer AND football and ran everyday. Probably was taking in about 1200 calories daily and running 6 miles. It's just how things are. After high school I got tired of all of that exercise and dieting and still being slightly larger than most people. So I quit both (ate like EVERYONE else around me - about 1800 calories a day) and I blew up over 100 lbs in 2 years. My metabolism just never existed. Sorry that I bother you so much with being overweight. You are so much better than me cause you don't have that problem.

I'm not fat, but I do have a little compassion. For a lot of people, it's not just about being greedy, they use food as a coping mechanism, it can even be considered an addiction for some people. Think how hard it is for someone to stop smoking....it's possible with a lot of willpower, but damn hard. Now imagine someone with a food addiction, trying to lower their food intake, but the difference is unlike with cigarettes, people need food to survive, so it will always be a struggle for them to keep it under control. If a smoker just reduced the amount of cigarettes they smoked, there will often be relapses. Remember some of these people have had poor eating habits from a young age. People need to be educated and not criticised, that just makes them feel worse and more likely to turn to food for comfort. HTH.

First of all you need to stop being so mean about the issue it is a very serious and painful issue for many people so don't sit there and make light of such a situation. Secondly as a nurse i know food is just one of the factors that contribute to people being fat genetics and bone structure also has a lot to do with it. I have seen people who have dieted and exercise their way almost to death and will never be thin and i have seen many thin people who eat constantly and will never gain weight. Last but least if people would focus on the heart and minds of people instead of their weight 51% of marriages wouldn't end in divorce.
PS i would rather be a fatty than a dumb *** that's for you and all the people who answer this question without knowledge.

It's not about self control.
Many - most - obese people are actually addicted to the "rush" you get from high blood sugar. It's as hard to kick as smoking or drugs. And it's self-perpetuating in that after the rush you get the "down", where your blood sugar goes below a resting level and you feel the need for more.
There are simple things which can be done to help combat this, but even many doctors don't really understand the mechanisms behind it, and there are too many people with too many contradictory solutions that don't work. Most people aren't competent to sift the truth from the lies and make the right decisions for themselves.
And in most people, obesity is in any case a reaction to much deeper psychological fears or trauma. It's a way of turning off their sexuality, or of feeling safe, or of lowering their status so they are not seen as a threat. You may not like the explanation that people are more complex than you'd like them to be, but it's the truth.
Stupidity, on the other hand, is incurable. Sorry.

consider this...if some ppl are naturally thin, meaning they never exercise, eat whatever they want and are still thin then why is it so hard to consider that a person who is fat can work out, watch what they eat and still can't lose weight....a number of factors are involved here too, scientists have just found a gene that they think controls the bodies 'sensors' to weight, too there are plenty of diseases...thyroid, etc. that contribute to weight loss and gain....plus, i never work out and eat whatever i want and cannot for the life of me gain weight (i am very lucky by societies standards), i have no medical condition which makes this happen but my sister only 3 yrs. older than me eats healthy and exercises 3 times a week, she cannot lose weight, she had lost 3-10 lbs by starvation but it all comes back once she starts to eat regular food (not high fat etc.) she does have a thyroid condition (low) but the doc's say that's just the way she's built...so if i am the way i am, then why can't she be the way she is? don't be so critical until you think about what others lives are like, its real easy to judge others until you walk a mile in their shoes. plus i am sure if you are thin then you have something else going on with you that is equally annoying to others. why not try judging by something other than your first impression.

Yes stop the lame excuses fattys.
Its all your fault that your a big pile of lard, nothing to do with the fact that healthy food is often 2 to 3 times more expensive than the junk food you buy for yourself and kids.
Never mind paying bills, pay for that gym membership instead as long as your thin, remember thats all that counts.Who need heat and light anyway ?
Take the guy that asked this question for an example.
Ive looked at his 360 page and and he must be 400 pounds at least and 5'1 in height yet even he can find the energy to type a few lines of text encouraging fellow plumpsters to shed the excess pounds.Think of the calories he burned lifting his chubby digits to type all those words.
Well done Skillman ,just keep off the liquidized steaks and youll get there eventually.

first and foremost it's a stereotype that all people that are overweight eat constantly. it's just not true. yes it is true that if u intake less and move more u lose weight, but it's not always just that. its more of eating habits such as time, what u eat...before i got pregnant i ate one meal a day and it wasnt overly porpotioned. its WHAT u eat, not only the quantity. it's a healthy lifestyle. not all thin people are healthy either. and there is such a thing as a healthy overweight person. i am one of them. i can walk further, run faster and do more activities than my sister that weighs about 98 lbs, five feet tall and wears a zero pant. i have no health conditions whatsoever. so, i've never been advised to lose weight for health reasons, i'm perfectly healthy!

Bare in mind that for some people it is an addiction, just like drugs. If only it was so easy-to just stop. An addiction to food, as strange as it sounds, means that even when an overweight person puts their mind to it and loses some weight, it just gets puts back on again-sometimes even more, because of the embarrasment of failure. Its important for them to deal with the12 steps as propogated by places like Overeaters Anonymous.
Try to overcome your prejudice against fat people-for some its extremely difficult-its not always about willpower. Can you honestly say that you will never again pick up alcohol again? Or porn? Or cigarettes? Or gambling? Same thing. No difference. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
