I say send it late, with an explanation. We all get busy or lose addresses, or become forgetful. It's nice to at least lift the burden of never having done it. You could easily write a note, stating that you just realized that perhaps you've never said thank you for the ___________,, and how it's appreciated; give details as to how.
Also take into account, some people don't fret over formalities and courtesies; it's likely they aren't counting all the thank you's, etc, (such as a wedding gift) and responding accordingly. However, if you've taken the time to gather thoughts on this etiquette, it's likely that it bothers you for not sending one. I wish you well!

Late, but how late are we talking? If your talking more than 6-9 months thats just ridiculous. I'm sure you can find some time to send a note. It doesn't have to be a letter, just a quick thank you and your done.

Go ahead and send it, the person will at least know you said thank you, and hey in this day and age who doesn't like to receive a bit of pleasant mail mixed in with the bills and junkmail. It will make there day...don't forget to include (even if false) how much you enjoy the gift. Also it's just polite
An Email or phone cal is no substitute for a genuine hand written Thank you note...the courtesy goes a long way, and who knows just might brighten their day.

Better late than never, but don't send 1 later than 2-3 months... It's pretty rude...

It is better to send a thank you note. If you wait too late to send a personalized message, a call will suffice.

Have got to agree that it is much better to receive it late then not at all. If your that late explain why and apologise for taking so long but at least send the people a thanks.

It is better to send one than not at all.. Why would it take so long to send one.. nine months is unreasonable. The problem though .... in your thank you note.. you should mention something as to why it took so long.. some lame excuse is in order rather than NONE AT ALL.

Send it. The giver will appreciate the thank you even if it is late in coming.
