I don't think that the notion of "highest" is meaningful.
However, if I had to answer, I'd pick a type of life that has persisted over the longest amount of time. Among large animals, I think that'd make sharks strong candidates, though I'll bet there are others that have lasted longer. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that there are far more successful microorganisms and/or plants.

Yes. What other life form builds cities, sky-scrapers, worries about where it puts its excrements, makes up their own gods, starts wars over philosophical reasons, uses medicine, and cooperates with his fellow life forms all over the planet to get what it wants?
There may be an animal that does each one, but there isn't one that does all of them simultaneously, as the humans do.

Humans are able to adapt to any region on earth. We are able to make logical decisions, based on past experiences and knowledge. We have a conscious. We are the only species that is trying to preserve our species. We can think abstract and objective thoughts. We consciously choose to do right and wrong. We know our extended families and ancestors. And on and on...

Yes I do. Because of the reason you gave...cognizance, sentience and reverence. The reason is that I haven't met anything on a higher level than humans...I also haven't met anything lower than some.
