Yes it provides comfort to some people and does do a lot of good.
It should not ever be allowed to have a political voice though. It should keep it self to its self and be fined heavily if it makes statements against the life choices of others or supports violence. It should never be allowed to be used as an excuse to get away with breaking the law or be allowed to make and judge the law. It should not be given any special protection for its believes under the law or any other privileges like tax breaks or charity status. It should be a private thing carried out behind closed doors.
Oh and by the way.........I think it is bo-llocks to!

Depends on what you mean by "religion". If you mean a belief system, then the issue is moot. People will always believe what they want to believe and there is no way to stop them. If you mean organized religion such as churches and cults then this is a different issue. If enough evidence is presented and enough people open their eyes to see the damage that has been done by almost every organized religion that has ever existed, then these organizations might eventually be outlawed or at least monitored and controlled more stringently. The problem is that nearly all people who belong to organized religions don't want to see and choose not to see that anything negative has occurred. It may take many many years and much more damage before people will finally acknowledge organized religion is nearly always oppressive.

ALLOWED to exist is such an inherently fascist statement.
I'm not religious myself, but I believe in the freedom of belief and choice of worship. I also will fight to death for your freedom not to like it. Religion does NOT turn smart people into blubbering fools. People aren't blubbering fools if they don't agree with us. It's when religious people try to impose their particular brand of religion onto others that it becomes dangerous, just as not ALLOWING religion to exist would be imposing one group's belief at the expense of anothers' freedoms and inalienable rights. Both extremes are just like each other. People can and should co-exist with different belief and learn to tolerate each other. As long as religion and politics don't mix in ANYway, society won't be harmed by the right of people to be allowed to have a religion.

religion has existed since culture and societies have formed. religion is one of the three ways one can gain control over others in a culture and society. the others are political and military. you can tell the type of religion by the society and the type of society by the religion. there is no way since individual worship has given way in a basic manner to organized social religion is anyone going to stop or cause religion to cease to exist.
