I am a single mum who has just potty trained her son, He is a really good boy going on his potty, but when we are outside & there is no potty around (quite often) - He often either wees himself, or if I help him with his pants - wees on his clothes / shoes! I have no guy in my life to show him (or to tell me how he should do it) so I would love advice on how he should / where he should wee outdoors, and most importantly how I should teach him. I have read similar q's to mine, but I don't even know the basics as to get him started
Step by step please - Lots of love Becky! xxx

Hi Becky,
I too like Karen f am keeping a note of all of these answers for when my son reaches this stage (a long time yet!).
I'm sure that he will learn in his own time, what I have learnt in the short time that I have been a parent is that it is amazing how quick they learn new things.
Sorry I cant be any help, but reading the answers from others I'm sure you will both be fine.
Good luck
Sam

Hi becky, I was in the same situation with my son and I found that using the toilet was easier for him than the potty… get him a step to stand on so that he is a slight bit higher than the bowl. Then get a water resistant marker and draw a star or something on the inside of the toilet at the back near the water mark. Make a big game out of it “I bet you cant hit that mark”!. Then every time he does make a big deal about it. Within a week mine was doing it perfectly.
Hope that helps.

You must be young?
There is a certain comfort to being in your own home and a cetain anxiety involved in being outside of the home and not being positive where a potty might be? and even if he does know, it may be that it's not HIS potty and children are psychologically attached to their "Business."
Sometimes while all that thinking and contemplating is going on... Time runs out on the bladder meter and it just happens.
Children have to learn to USE their bladder and their lower sphincter muscles.
The only way to deal with this is to verbally remind him when you notice him struggling to hold it in. Symptoms include pulling at it, holding it or adjusting it a bit too much, (Boys testies don't fully drop right away and there is not need for a child that young to be adjusting, as a man might, other than a need to pee.)
You have to teach him and it is not a matter of physical differences between you and him. It is actually easier to potty train a boy than it is a girl. THat is just something that you are feeling guilty about and should not internalize it or incorporate into his learning ability.
I put cheerios into the potty and we played sink and float. It got them dead on target and they never missed and always wanted to try. Use his natural competitive nature as a male to play games to get him to the potty on time.
I used to carry jars in the car and stroller in case of just such an emergency. Easy to carry easy to empty better than carrying around a pissy kid too or having to explain it away if he needs to pee on the side of a building!

Firstly, you need to know that he won't necessarily remember to ask when he needs a wee. As difficult as it sounds, you need to remember to take him for a wee every 30 minutes or so. Show him how to hold his willy out so that it doesn't go over his pants, but also remember to pull his trousers and underpants right down, so they don't constrict his legs.
I have had no trouble with getting my son (4 in November) to wee. However, I'm a bloke so its easier for me. You really do need a bloke to help your son with this. Any male relatives or family friends who he'd trust enough to wee in front of? This is particularly the case as your son gets older and he needs to learn how to use the urinals and cubicles - you won't be able to go in and show him, so its important there be a male that he can trust and who will teach him what to do. I know this sounds impractical, but there are likmitations on how much you as his mother can do in this respect.
Good luck!

I don't understand why the first 7 answers got bad ratings as they were all spot on plus more probably that I haven't read yet!
If you don't teach him to hold it & aim he won't learn & he'll keep wetting his trousers, pants, shoes etc! If you really don't want him holding it then squat him as a girl would & let him go that way but the downside of that when he goes to school he may wonder why all the boys are weeing standing up!

I've never potty trained a boy before but from what I've been told you've gott show them how to hold it out and straight and how to arch their back. I've heard someone say something about putting their knee into the small of the boy's back so he can arch and wee outwards. :) Good luck. :)

get your little boy to lean forward on a tree or wall. with his legs back further it should incourage him to wee away from his feet or you could always rest your finger under neath his privates to encourage him to pee upwards, encourage him to shake when he as finished. if that fails take his trousers of completley then when he is used to peeing properly he will be able to go without taking his trousers of,or you could always buy a potty for him to use out side if he feels comfatable with that. i used to play a game with my son where we would run around saying hold it, hold it, is it still there, keep holding! and befor you know it you are at a toilet. hope this helps
