Winter is the season for whale watching in Hawaii. They spend the summers up north for 6 months, where they do all of their eating for the year. Then they go to Hawaii to give birth, and do no eating for 6 months.
I had the awesome opportunity to see a live birth one year off the coast of Maui. The mother was surrounded by "aunties" and a pod of dolphins to chase away any sharks that might come near. The mother comes to the surface to give birth. She then keeps the baby afloat on top of her head for about 15 minutes until the baby starts swimming on its own. It's an amazing sight!

The whales start arriving the end of Nov. and stay till March, some males may stay longer. Breeding is the main activity and in some areas (Maalaea bay, Maui) the whales are very abundant. There were approx. 7000 humpbacks in HI last year. Check out my photos of Whales. We spent all winter there last yr.
