depends on the intensity with which you walk... is it a stroll or a pushed momentum... either way, it doesn't hurt.

It's not necessarily the length of time but the length in distance that makes the difference. If you walk 100 yards in an hour is very different than walking 5 miles in an hour. I'm extreme, but I think you might see the point.
It sure is a whole lot better than not walking. It will help lose weight as long as you are taking in less calories than you are burning.
If I can be of further assistance, let me know.

Walking an hour a day can indeed help you to lose weight, provided it's done at a fast jaunt, not a leisurely stroll. You want to get your heart rate up and keep it up over a long period of time. That burns calories. You also need variety in your workouts. Try to get in some stairs or hills. Walking the same path every day, using the same muscles....your body gets very efficient and won't burn as many calories over time. You need to use different muscles, so change it up now and then.
Also, consider your diet. If you're still taking in more calories than you burn, you will not lose weight. There are many calculators online that will help you determine just how many calories you use each day, because you use calories in every day living just by breathing air and blinking your eyes and keeping the blood moving through your body. So find a basal metabolism calculator, and then adjust your diet accordingly. 3500 calories equals 1 pound, so just by decreasing your calories by 500, over a period of 7 days you can lose one pound.

Yes, my daughters and I started walking in our local mall every afternoon. Within 2 months my oldest daughter lost 20 pounds, I lost 10. At first we were walking 20 minutes a day, and gradually worked our way up to 1 hour daily. It's also a good way to maintain your weight. We really didn't change anything in our diet. We just didn't allow ourselves second helpings at lunch or dinner. It really made a big difference in how we felt, we now had more energy than before. The greatest reward was the time we spent together.

I can't hurt!
Depending on how much weight you want to lose, you might need to burn off more calories than walking alone can burn.
Jogging. Running. Sprinting.
If you only want to lose a few pounds, then walking alone would probably do the trick.
Good luck,
-P

If you can keep your heart rate elevated so that you are in an aerobic state, then yes...it would be very good. casual walking won't do much for weight loss.
Aerobic state: Winded but able to hold a conversation...good for weight loss
Anaerbic state: Heavily winded and not able to hold a conversation...this can actually teach your body to store fat
Example: I've seen a lot of overweight mail carriers. They walk casually while delivering the mail.

Yes it does. It "helps" you to lose weight since it burns calories.
But take not that the only way you'll lose weight is to burn more calories than how many calories you take.
1 lb = 3000 or 3500 kcal I think.

Sure, in balance with a healthy diet, plenty of sleep, and staying hydrated. For some reason not getting enough sleep or water causes people to feel hungry and eat more junk. Walking is great exercise for body, mind, and soul. Go for it! :)

yes, there are two good things about walking, one is that you are outside and away from the couch and refridgerator so you wont be eating extra snacks, and then of course as you walk you will be burning calories, how many depends on your activity level.
