You might consider adopting a retired racing greyhound. As many others have said, you really need to adopt an older dog who's bladder and temperment will keep your apartment safe while you are at work. They are generally a little bigger than you are looking for, but females can be as small as 50lbs. Greyhounds usually retire between 2-5 years old. They may not have been in a house situation (if so they may not be housetrained)but they will be crate trained. Greyhounds are natural sprinters - they have been nicknamed 'the 45mph' couch potato because they can sleep 18-20 hours per day. They have low energy needs and do very well getting the majority (or all) of their excersise from leash walking. Two more benefits for apartment living are that greys do not secrete as much oil through their skin as other breeds so they don't smell and they are usually very quiet and almost never bark. There are a lot more benefits to owning a retired racer, but they also have some special requirements too. You do not want to hear this but Great Dane or Irish Wolfhounds are great for apartments. I have had both in apartments.
Their idea of a perfect day is to crawl out of your bed and have some breakfast go outside for a few minutes and come back to bed until you come home. They are both very laid back breeds neither is a barker and pretty much couch potatoes.
Retired racing greyhounds are also like that.
Do not look at anything terrier or beagles or stuff like that as they needs lots of run time and are to wired to be alone all day.

I provided a site below offering extensive research tools and notes on how to choose a pet that's right for your circumstance.

A note worthy consideration, if you like labs they too can be great for an apartment, very smart animal easily trained. Consider pet day care offering daily walks and treats until they are house broken and familiar with it's new surroundings. You'll have the dog you like best & make it pleasant for each of you.

Good luck

The problem with little dogs is they are hard to potty train. I'd suggest a Great Dane. Initially I'm sure you're thinking "No way!" cause they're so huge, but, honestly, they take up very little room. And they're lazy! They'll get up in the morning to say goodbye, but sleep the entire day while you're at work. And, face it, who's ever gonna mess with your place with a big old Great Dane inside?! Look into them a little bit. I think you'd be surprised at what great apartment dogs they are!

We used to have a miniature schnauzer. Not very hyper, not barky much and was just a wonderful dog. Also, schnauzers don't shed. I love big dogs too but I couldn't have one either in an apartment. And the rare apartments that do let you have big dogs, they want insane nonrefundable fees, I think it was almost 400 dollars at one place.

Well, small, non-hyper breeds would do best in a small space. I have a shih tzu and I think they do good in just about any space. I would look into small breeds and find one that has all the characteristics that you are looking for. Check out akc.com to read up on breed information. Good luck!

I have mini-daushund they weigh about 8-11 lbs. They dont' bark, unless the doorbell rings and mine loves to be left alone. He is happy to when I walk him but for the most part just wants to be in my lap or in his bed. I have owned two dogs of this breed one a female growing up and now mine. Never had any problems.

Look at Welsh Corgi's. they are short legged, but hardy, well boned dogs. Kids can play with them and not be so likely to hurt the dog. They are fairly laid back and should be happy with regular walks.
