I've recently lost a stone of the weightwatchers diet (now I am 5 foot tall and 9 stone). but realise that dieting can only acheive so much. My aim is now to tone up a little and increase my stamina (would love to be able to actually run for a bus without gettiing puffed out). What are the best exercises for beginners to increase all round fitness?

Congratulations on joining a gym to increase your stamina and general fitness. That is a good thing to do. However, remember that merely joining is insufficient, you have to show up and do the work, at least 3X/week.

You should do both aerobic exercise to build up stamina, which includes running on a treadmill or stairstepper, or any similar machines that get your breathing going and work up a sweat for at least 20 minutes. You should also work your muscles with a good variety of muscle-building machines, especially the larger muscles of the legs.

You might want to begin with a personal trainer at your gym as you begin, he or she will get you started with a good all-around program until you learn a bit and feel comfortable to keep it going on your own.

Remember, you cannot store up these things, you have to keep up regular exercise, the rule of "use it or lose it" is unfortunately true when it comes to fitness.

Don't bother to join a gym. You will go regularly for a while and gradually fall off until the time between going will get longer and longer.
The cost to is pretty high and in the end will be wasted.
Best thing is to build up stamina and tone your muscles by first walking at least 2 miles three times each week. Then as it becomes easy then you can increase the distance by say half a mile. After a few weeks increase your pace but not the distance until you are jogging.
Do this for a few weeks and increase your pace a little to almost a run. Then at intervals during you run you can sprint for 100 metres. This way you will build up stamina and muscle tone. The fun is in seeing the time you take to do it gradually get less and less.
Do other exercises as a worm up and warm down to help the stomach and back muscles. You might loose more weight doing this.
Best of luck

It's good to start out with some aerobic stuff like the bicycles and treadmills or my favorite, the rowing machine. You should do this for about 20 minutes. Then go use the weight machines. Try to do about 10 sets at a time on each machine you use ... set the weight so you have to put in a good effort but not so heavy that you're dying. I'd try and spend an other 20 minutes or so on those machines. Do it maybe 4 days a week and you'll be on your way. Good luck!

You should consider a two pronged approach. You want to do some Resistance training to tone your muscles and accelerate your metabolism. Three days a week would be a good routine. Do basic weight or machine resistance routines and try to get a full body workout within an hour. Twice a week, on alternate days, if you have the energy, go for an aerobic routine such as stationary bike or tread mill. Consistency is the key. Get plenty of protein. You'll need it.

Hi,

Well done on your weight loss so far and you def have the right idea joining a gym.

Best thing to do is figure out where all the gyms are in your local area, then just give them a call and arrange to be shown round.

Most gyms are happy to show you around for free and may even give you a few free passes so you can try it out (ask if they don't offer), then you can decide which one you like best.

Some gyms (like Fitness First) will also chuck in a few personal training sessions when you first join which is excellent if you are starting out as they will show you how to use equipment and help you devise plans to achieve your goals.

Good luck!

The gym will offer a personal trainer for a fee, but it is worth it. I don't know nuthing about stones, but my girlfriend lost a few pounds and is now in fantastic shape.
