Heads are lopped off for murder, rape, treason and, sometimes dealing drugs. Petty offenses are not punishable with even the cutting off of a hand or foot unless it is a very serious offense or the latest in a long line of offenses.
The men are taken from the military and are trained. The family mentioned above is no longer the way it is done.
Before you decide to take up this profession, you might want to consider this:

When I was in Jeddah in the late 1980's there was a multiple beheading in the square. The executioner was overcome with blood lust and started attacking people who were witnessing the beheadings. He killed 3 other people before he was subdued. From that time to this, there is a soldier who is aiming a gun at the executioner. When the beheading is complete the sword better be dropped in a nano second or he will be shot.
Still want the job?

Hi, just wanted to clarify 1 thing b4 I answer your quesiton. Where did you get "I know alot of heads are cut off there for petty crimes" from??

Most probably from Movies, anyways execution is Saudi Arabia is not for petty crimes it is for Murder, espionage, treason, I would say these crimes are punishable by death in most western countries too!

Now back to your question. The executioners do not seek the job and are not appointed, they belong to a family that has practiced this job for hundreds of years. It is an honour for them to undertake the duties of their ancestors and that is how a son follows the path of his father and so on.

U have to have a track record of being a successful executioner for the past 10 years and have at least 10 heads to show..
