Saltpeter is a common name for potassium nitrate, a common inorganic chemical. It is **supposed** to cause an inability to achieve an erection, but that's an urban legend.

At the beginning of basic training we were all given a pill and the rumor went around that it was saltpeter. This seemed borne out when we all stopped waking up with morning wood but as I went through training and became a medic I learned that the pill was a broadspectrum antibiotic to help prevent upeer respiratory problems (common in basic) and that the lack of boners was due to the demanding situations we were in. Good story though.

That's an old wives tale .
Potassium nitrate was , repeat was , used as a food preservative.
Train hard all day and half the night and see if you have the energy to get an erection . If you do , it'll be in your sleep and you won't know it .

Now being an old man with a prostate about the size of a football, I sure wish I could get some "saltpeter" in powder form so I could snort it up my nose and get sex off my mind.

The chemical compound potassium nitrate is a naturally occurring mineral source of nitrogen. It is a nitrate with chemical formula KNO3. When it burns, it shows a bright pink to purple color.

It's an urban legend, actually. It's quite universal. The real reason is that humans revert to different pack like behavior, not focused on mating. Like young male baboons, who can't get a mate. They try to get up the hierarchy.

only rumors and wives tales.
I heard about that while in basic and tech school. If they did... it sure didn't affect me.
