Because he has been mistreated in the past, give him time, and plenty of attention and eventually he will get over it

Hiya well first off well done youfor rescueing the poor little dog. God only know what has happened to him/her before you got the dog. It may be that it was never allowed inside a house and if it did get in it may have been beaten. Just be patient with your dog and it will soon come to trust you and know that YOU are not going to hit it a SMACK

I would assume that at some point in the past he/she has been abused whilst inside a house. Speak to the rescue centre that you got the dog from to see if they shed any light on this behaviour, and they may be able to offer you expert advice on how to tackle this problem. It's going to take a lot of time, effort and love on your part to help the dog overcome its fears. Best of luck

I adopted a Pit-bull from a shelter, I do not think she had ever been in a home in her entire life, when we got her home she was very apprehensive to enter our home, once inside she was very nervous to say the least. Once you get your dog in the home make is a positive experience, sent quality time with you new dog, them go out side and come back in, do this over and over until there are no problem, we always gave our dog a treat when entering the house. It will take time but this will pass, when in the home go about normal business, do not make changes in the home to accommodate the dog, but take time to make him a comfortable as possible.

i got my dog from a rescue centre 5 years ago and she was the same. You don't know what kind of life theyve had. the previous owner may not have let him come into the house, kept him in the garden/garage etc Mine was kept in the back garden and fed catfood! She dislikes men and other dogs.
You just have to give them some time and loads of love, sit outside with him gain his trust and then he'll be more likely to relax

I had a rescue dog who was similar, its about feeling trapped I would imagine, I know its a bit cold but try leaving the door open so he can come and go freely and obvious things such as putting his food inside. As trust is established betwen you and him he will overcome this fear and associate the inside with good things such as praise, fuss and reward and will realise you are not out to hurt himas his previous owners may have.

Like others have said, he was probably disciplined in the past for trying to come inside, and now he is scared to. Time and trust will heal this. For now, make sure that coming in the house is always a very pleasant, happy experience. Dont' get frustrated when calling him in because he will be able to sense it.

Our second GSD is a rescue from the local pound, we had exactly the same prob that he preferred the outside to inside.
We thought the prob might be that he might be kennel bound ie, gotten too used to being in an outside environment all the time.
We treated ours to little bits of cheese which ours goes nuts for(not too much this will upset their stomach ) .
Unfortunately after a while his behaviour denotes that he has been miss treated.

Yes he is scared. You have to show him a lot of love and prove he can trust you. Drop a trail of good stuff to eat leading into the house. Do not approach him when you get him inside. Speak to him softly and let him sniff his way around. Gentleness and patience is required to Socialize a shelter dog who might have been mistreated. Good Luck and Enjoy.

have you ever thought that your new wee dog might think its going in to your house for a beating? it may have had a rotten owner the last house it lived in that beat it up. you will just have to take your time and be patien with him, he will soon come round when he realises how lovin you will be to him, in the end you will have the most faithful dog ever, cos dogs never forget the kindness they recieve x
