Winston Churchill, in his first wartime broadcast.
"I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle wrapped in mystery inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key."

RE:
Where does the expression "A Mystery, wrapped in a riddle, wrapped in an enigma..." etc. etc. come from?
I've seen this expression in the movie JFK (Joe Pesci's character says it), on The Simpsons, and most recently, on Will and Grace. Where did it come from, and what is the proper way to say it?

I'm more of a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma, rolled up in a Bagel Dog.

That my friend is the mystery. Is it a mystery wrapped in a riddle or is it wrapped in a layer of unknown substance the likes of which this world has never seen? Is it indeed an enigma or do we really have an itch we cannot reach?
