I was walking down quite a fairly busy street and I saw a handful of people walking in my direction. I was minding my own business when all of a sudden one of them (a man) said, "Give me all your money" and then just carried on walking on past me. I got a fright, as he said it loudly and a few of the other people looked at me, so they must have heard. Should I have told the police or just ignore him as a 'nutter?' I didn't dare look behind me at him.

Makes you stop and think about going anywhere alone these days. What an idiot, eh.
I see one person suggested snapping a photo. Personally, don't know if I'd have wanted to do ANYthing to further the exchange.
I would be counting myself lucky to have been confronted by no more than a goof.
The police can't help until an actual crime is committed. Unfortunately just TERRORIZING still isn't a crime.

did he say anything else or did he approach you or make any move to accost you? if not he may have been talking to someone else about something entirely or saying the punchline to a joke....the people with him may have saw the surprised look on your face and wondered what was wrong with you...either way if he threatened you then yes call the cops, was he a 'nutter' maybe, would i have looked back at him...yes, if i thought he demanded my money then i would make sure he didn't turn around and come after me then i would have pulled out a little 'jack bauer' on him and he'd not be asking anyone for any money for a long time.

If you perceived a real threat from him, he's comitting an offence under s4 Public Order Act. Even if he was just a nuisance, he's committing an offence under s5 same act, though not arrestable unless witnessed by a bobby. Report the event as 'sus circs' to the Police, and they'll know for next time.

It sounds like a guy trying to be a big man in front of his friends but being a total ar$e instead.

If you were really that scared you should inform the police as they would probably give him a warning .

It could have been that he was in the middle of telling a story and you just heard one line of the story. It could be that what he was saying had nothing to do with you and the other people looked at you because they realized that you may have heard what he had said. I wouldn't let it bother me although I know it was probably upsetting to you.

That has happened to me where I have one line of a story and it upset me.

Dont worry.
It's when they want credit cards and Pin Numbers that you have a problem.
Tell them the Pin is your birthday, and give them your birthday details, there is a 90% chance it is in any case. Just make sure the pin is something different. mine is the number of my favourite railway engine Flying Scotsman,........well no its the number of the fastest british non streamlined steam locomotive.
