Ok - now that you've recognized the "habit" what you need to do is BEFORE you sit down to your meal, tell him to go to the bathroom. Then if he should start to get up once you're seated, say: "No, you've just been. Now sit down and eat."
It may take a bit of time and a strong will (because little kids can be a bit stubborn), but it will eventually break him of the habit.

Kids get habits. Kids like to play little games.
Try sending him to the loo (potty) just before you are ready to plate up the meal. Give him 5 minutes, make sure he washes his hands and tell him he will remain at the table until everyone is finished eating. The table isn't just for eating food, it's for solidifying the family bond - talking.
He's pulling your chain and if you don't like the way he's taken control over meal time, you are going to have to change it.

My four year old is exactly the same way. He does actually go potty so I don't want to discourage him. I always felt it was a way for him to control the situation. The situation is that we control the dinner table and tell him how, what, and how much to eat. I think this is a developmental thing where they are developing their own identities and sense of self. Just know that you are not alone. Have patience and good luck.

Tell him to ask to be excused from the table before running off to the potty. Would you rather he pee his pants at the dinner table? Suck up and deal with washing him up after he potties, that's part of the job description for parenting.

sounds pretty common to me....what to do is to say to him....i am putting dinner on the table in a little while...please use the bathroom and wash your hands before we eat.....and let him have some warning that you expect these things to be done before dinner plus this will get him in a positive habit

That used to happen to my daughter. She has a fast metabolism and has to go to the bathroom before she eats....Probably physical, not psychological OR habit. She is 26 and sometimes still has that problem. Patience mom!

Go wash him?!?! At four years old, he should be able to wash his own hands, wipe his bottom, etc.....
Try this: five minutes before dinner's ready, tell him it's almost time to eat, and to go potty before he sits down.

Maybe try having him go potty prior to eating instead of having everyone sit down to eat and then him getting up...

He's definitely playing you .My 3 yr old always has to do poo as soon as I put him down to nap. Its so annoying ,I tell him to go before hand sometimes he does. However when his dad puts him down to nap he goes to bed straight away and doesnt need to do poo, funny isnt it.
