Reading bones as divination?

Question

In the recent film "Beowulf and Grendel" there is a brief scene where the Danish witch begins a reading of bones and then is interrupted.

I am curious as to how exactly is this done? What type of thing would the reader be looking for to get the message in question to interpret?

I'm not planning to go out and collect bones anywhere to do this. LOL I'm simply curious is all.

Casting bones is used to glean knowledge from an specific inquiry. Different bones in the set hold different meaning, often marked by futhark or other runs. As the bones are cast (thrown) the form a pattern who's interpretation gives hints at the answer.

DIVINATION comes from the DIVINE. However, humans abuse it.
No kind of spiritual dealing is a game to play.
Divination can bring out ones personal fears and desires. Since
OUR spirit is the channel for the reading.
There are negative entities in reality. And just because someone has spiritual gifts. Doesn't mean they are your FREIND!
Joseph used a CUP to Divine. (Genesis 44).
And the Discples threw lots to pick another disciple after
Judas killed himself. (Beggining of the Book of Acts).
But always ask for guidance and protection from our
HIGHEST POWER when you use spiritual power.
This is only a learning experience. To dissolve doubts. Don't
PLAY with it. That weakens the power and lets evil in.
Not to mention the fact one can "obsess" over a reading.
Any reading is based on the path we are on at that point in time. It dies not "dictate" what must happen. Following such things like
astrology blindly, will make one a victim of FATE!
By using prayer and positive action, one can turn the course of
events. Forge your own DESTINY.

as with any means of divination, the method is merely a tool to make it easier for the one doing it.

and the specific method of what means what would be very specific in this case, to the person using it. with tarot cards and such there are more constants that can be grossly generalized to, for example, but stuff like bones... ick.
