I find it very easy to slip into negative thinking patterns which really doesn't do me any good. Anybody out there who can suggest anything to help me beat the blues?

Exercise, eat healthy, plenty of outdoor activities and watch some good comedies ;-)

one thing you could do is find something good in every situation and believe it or not there is! it never fails even in the most horrific of events in our lives something good always comes out of it, i'm not saying a horrible event is a good thing but it does seem that something good always comes from the situation. you're right its very easy to get caught up in the negative and it just seems to feed on itself, so i guess the same could be said of thinking positive thoughts you do it enough and you start to feel that way...its doesn't mean you're unrealistic, in fact seeing the negative and knowing that a positive is on the way is realistic. the next time you encounter a negative thought think of a positive one that counters it...you'll find you'll train your mind to start doing that automatically and soon you won't look at everything so negatively you start seeing it realistically...just remember no matter what is happening(bad or good) today, tomorrow it will be different and by next week just a reminder, by next month a fading memory and by next year a distant memory.

Thisi is something that helped me this morrning.
I am writing a paper which is very important to me, and got stuck in. This morrning I woke up with complite negative thinking about it ant felt depressed.
Than I started to monitor my thinking and it went something like this: evrebody knows how to do such work > (I don't know therefor...) i am totaly stupid > i cant do it > (if i can't do it) i am totaly worthless> (therefor) i can't do enything> i am more stupind than i though i am > (therefor) i can't do it ....and start from the begginig....

when this came in to my mind I started to think about all sentances and my coclusion. Here are the results:
I have a problem whit my paper. It is hard to me to do it but not because I am stupid but because it is something new in my country and I can't get help from the people around me. When something is new it is usualy hard to do it.

New conclusion: try to get help from someon else. How about Q&A on yahoo? Maybe someone will give me a new direction.
And I posted message and even if there is no help I relised that I am not stupid and maybe my story will help someone.
I like to think that that means I am a god person :-)

P.S. Sorry for spelling mistakes English is my second language.

Open your mind to other ways of looking at situations. Not only is there a positive way of thinking, there is a positive way of looking at whatever situation you have.
Think about what you are grateful for, we all have gratitude for something. When we start looking for it, you will find that there are many things to be grateful for.
You can ask yourself, do I really want to be negative or would I rather feel positive? Check out why you would want to be negative...and decide to be more positive.
Negativity is a bad habit and it is one that only we can change for ourselves.
Also, try not to get caught up in other people's negative thinking. Notice it... and you will see how inappropriate it is.

No big secret. Take control of those thoughts. Also, take an action. If you have a negative thought, do something positive, preferably for someone else, and don't expect a reward.

It takes a lot of practice, but you DO have control over your thoughts. It just takes a LOT of practice.

Everytime you catch yourself thinking a neg thought, change it to a positive one. It takes work, but eventually it'll become automatic and a great habit.

Watch the Disney movie Pollyanna again. That should help.
