This is a multi-step process. First, get a quality preventive like Frontline, Revolution or Advantage from your vet. You can bathe your pet 2 days later to scrub off dead fleas and flea dirt--the product will still be working. Reapply as directed on the package. And remember you may still see fleas on your pet after applying a preventive. The preventive does not discourage fleas from jumping on; no product does. But it will kill them once they get on to feed. Have faith.

Second, you will need to treat your house because as soon as fleas feed on your dog, they will lay eggs in your environment. Don't waste your money on Hartz or other crap, get the good house spray from the vet. A flea bomb is NOT going to cut it. You need the spray to hit the baseboards, under furniture and carpets--all the dark, damp places fleas like to hide.

Third, you may--depending on how bad your infestation is--have to repeat the spray in the house. Flea life cycles average about every 10 days, so be on the lookout.

Fourth, remember that flea pupae (the pre-adult stage) can hibernate up to 18 months, just waiting for the right conditions to hatch. So your flea problem may disappear quickly this fall and reappear next spring when the humidity starts to rise. Keep Frontline on hand to break that cycle before it can take over again!

Good luck!

I rid my animal of fleas by flea bathing them first, then adding Frontline or Advantage. There just isn't any other way to get it under control. I made the mistake of bringing her home without treating her and fleas got into my home, if your animal has fleas then your home does too and will need to be treated before all the little eggs hatch and infest your home.

Here is how I treated my home:

I am going through the flea thing right now too, we have a sand foundation and this year was horrible for fleas here in Michigan! Check out this link for helpful hints:

I did what this article said and I was able to rid my home of fleas, so far anyway...

I treated my cat with Advantage, I vacuumed thoroughly, under couches and beds, I washed all bedding and clothes that were on the floor, all rugs, I then bought a few bombs made by Adams, set them off (read instructions thoroughly), I then vacuumed again and sprayed an upolsty and carpet spray by Adams on areas under couch cushions and and couches, anything the bomb could not reach, then each day after I vacuumed again and again, making sure I got everything.... make sure you are throwing your vacuum bags away. It;s expensive, I am not going to lie.... it's definitely costly.... I have never been infested before, my mistake was not treating my cat in the Spring. If I had done that I would have never gotten a problem. Advantage and Front line are expensive, but I found that the store bought ones, like Hertz don't work.

Good luck, it's alot of work, but I think you can do it.

To me the behind the neck things work the best, you use one once a month, break the end off and squeeze the liquid neck to the skin. You may also need to buy flea powder to apply to your carpet if the dog has them bad. A flea bath is good too, but directly after you give you dog the appliication of flea liquid. I usually buy them from the Vet and they put the first one on.

I live out in the country and I have 3 dogs that run the woods by day and sleep in my house at night. I use nothing but K9 Advantix on them. I have a mastiff and a blue heeler and a boston terrier and it works the same on all 3. I buy it from my vet by weight. I by stuff from walmart called Natures Guardian that I put on my carpets that is a all natural. It kills and repels fleas, ticks and other indoor pests with natural ingredients which is good since I have small children who Love their dogs.

I have 4 dogs. I use the Program. We have not had fleas for years.... The Program causes the fleas to become infertile and thus ends the cycle.

I have heard about putting a clove of garlic crushed, in the dog food once a day does away with fleas instead of using the pesticide the vet reccomends. They are putting garlic in a lot of dog food things lately. Try it, and see if it does any good.

go to the vet and get FRONTLINE. brill! dont get any stuff at the pet store, our big mistake when we got our dog , we thought we would get rid of fleas with their cheap brands but we spend more money on these cheap brands than the frontline we got from the vet, you get 3 tubes and they last for 3 months at a time!

I think frontline or program is the best they can be pricey but if you have just the one dog i think you get three viles inside the pack and it should last for a few months and for dogs there is one that is also a heart wormer to so you get two for one which would be cheaper to and you kill two birds with one stone.
Good luck
