In some part of India it really matters whether water is served in plain glass or steel glass.I know about eastern UP where for SC,STor BC water is served in plain glass and for general class steel glass.but now very few people do this.

Its better to serve in glass, because steel no matter how you wash still it has peculiar smell. In plain glass water sparkles and pleasing to eye.
Steel glasses are used by many homes bcos housemaids
are nasty with glasses.
Steel ware is only popular in India, glass crockery is used throughout the world.
Never in my life did I use Steel...I feel it is meant for Low income family cos they have to do one time investment

In any context , if you serve your guests water in a steel glass they can drink from it without liiping them . If you sere in glass tum, mlers they would necessarily have to drink from it by liiping it . generally the inidans do not like to keep the drinking vessel with their lips as it is an unhygeinic practice and is likely to spread disease to both the parties . the one who drinks and the one who serves too. They wouls lip only hot liquids .
the rasonis this :
genrally you do not knowwhat your guest doeswith his hands and how clean he is . some people pass urine and do not wash their hands .some people pick their nose and do not clean their hands . some people screatch themselves up anywhere and every where and do not wash their hands . some people do not ceanse their mouths properly or celanse at all after eating food . some people do not mintai their mouths hygeinically . so to avoid any possible contamoatioin , in th eolden days , people used to serve thir guests in silver vessels . Siver vessels ar costly and so the quests will fell very honourd to be served in silver tumblers . but the silver vessels have germicidal quality . Thus it is safeer if te gueat is diseased and is one who does not have hygeinic habits . In these days many house holds do not hae siver vesels . so amy woud prefer to serve thier guest in glass vessels as glass vessels can b cleaned very well and the do not corrode and retain any stin or dirt like metl vessels . .More thn the Inidan quests , the reare very highly developed societies which have very unhygeininc habits like those who do not hesitate to kiss eveybody in the mouth including the dogs and those who do not use wter to wash their hands but simply wioe their hands in tissue paper .so not ionly in Inidan context , but in all context s , it is safer to use the glass vessels to serve any guests .
