There is no fool proof Plasma, LCD or DLP. Each has its high points and low points.
At 42 inches, it is a bit small for DLP. Most likely you will look between Plasma and LCD. Keep in mind that Plasma has a limited life, around 70,000 hours, once it is done, you would have to recharge the inert gas but by that time you will want the next best technology. Most plasmas are still EDTV and not HDTV (true 1080P)
LCD's are great, but they don't produce blacks like the plasma's, and pixels may go bad, in one place or another. LCD's will not have burn in affect like a plasma, and that is a must for PS3 or XBOX playing.
DLP's are nice, that is what I have, but keep in mind the bulb is a limited life item around 6000-7000 (unless you buy a piece of S toshiba, then it is 1000). You can also play Xbox and PS3 on a DLP since it is not subject to burn in.
Make sure you go with a name brand like Samsung, Sony, Pioneer, etc and stay away from the oddball names.

It sort of depends on a few factors....
DLP if you are extremely limited on cash...
LCD is best if you have a well lit room. Because it is a backlit technology it shows better.
Plasma is best if you watch mostly at night or in a dimly lit room because it has better blacklevels becuase it doesn't push light thru the screen. So the blacks look black not grey. The statement that most Plasma's are EDTV is completely incorrect. Most are HD TV.
LCD's now have reasonably priced 1080P models. Thats the horizontal line scans (1920x1080) That gives you more pixels (dots that make up the screen) meaning a more life like picture.
In summary:
Go with LCD unless you only watching at night or a dark room.
Best choice in models:
LCD: Sony - KDLV40XBR2
Plasma: Panasonic TH-42PX600U

DLP TV's are cheaper but with less quality then Plasma and LCD Bulbs are easy to replace. DLP are also larger and cannot be hung on a wall.
LCD are good quality picture. However suffer when watching HIGH Speed shows like Hockey. I also notice a line around the edges of things like text. The Sony Bravada is a good example with pc inputs.
Plasma are good for about 30 Years at 60000 hours which is plenty long enough as in 30 years Holographic TV's will be perfected. Plasmas are also great for high speed and for viewing a wider spectrum of colours. A good one would be a Samsung HPS4233 about 1899$ CAD 549 Billion! colors and 10000:1 Contrast ratio. Also has PC inputs and a Gaming mode to enhance quality of games.
Plasma TV have burn in protection if you enable it so would not belive all that hype however don't leave your tv on with a still image for too long i recomend that for all TV's and Monitors.

PLASMA makes use of gasoline in plasma sort for reveal, lcd makes use of lcd and a mild source for reveal DLP digital mild Processing makes use of a shade wheel and shifting mirrors Plasma television remains the biggest, yet lcd television is now additionally available in a length similiar to a medium Plasma television and a stable one additionally grant extra desirable assessment. a stable lcd television tend to be larger in fee than a Plasma television in a similar length. DLP quite under plasma and has a smaller marketplace share. A DLP has a bulb that has to get replaced on a ordinary foundation. it is quite costly yet would be achieved via the client. the two lcd and Plasma are skinny adequate to mount on the wall mutually as a DLP is lots lighter yet sounds like a typical television As for various varieties TVs. you additionally can desire to look at getting a projector and mount it to the ceiling.

Here is what they guy at the store told me. I am shoping for the same.
LCD
Cheaper, repairable, picture not as sharp as plasma.
DLP
Cheaper, repairable, picture not as sharp as plasma, larger (can't mount on wall).
Plasma
Expensive, when it breaks it trash, can mount on a wall, best picture.
I may go with plasma -using for PC and not much space. Get a warranty. Since it can't be repaired you will get a new TV if it breaks.
