No, in fact you can be prosecuted if you intend to use anything as a weapon........for example, if you carry a bicycle chain or sharpened screwdriver.
The police only have to show that you did intended to use it as a weapon

If you buy ANYTHING with the purpose of using it as a weapon, that could be deemed an offence.
If you genuinely need to defend yourself you can use REASONABLE force.
Take a 6'6", fit, young, strong, male and a 4'10", frail, old lady, both of who confront a burglar in their home. The burglar is say, 5'8", a bit unfit and in say in his mid to late thirties.
Both grab a kitchen knife which is close at hand and stab the burglar (not fatally) in a bid to defend their homes. The elderly lady would be MUCH more likely to be deemed to have used REASONABLE force than the young strong male.
That is just a random example - but might help. But NO, again, there are NO legal self-defence weapons to buy in the UK.

you cannot carry any weapon, or item which may be intended as a weapon.
on the other hand you can use a weapon to defend yourself if you have it for a lawful purpose. say you're on your way home after playing cricket, someone attacks you with a knife and you crack them round the head with your cricket bat. That's fine, as long as the action that you took is proportionate with the attack you were facing.
that defence goes straight out of the window if you intend to carry the item for use if attacked. this is mainly because some people cannot be trusted not to abuse the law, and use it to cover illegal activity.
also it is the fact that if every citizen carried a weapon then the criminals would have to carry bigger and better weapons, making the whole problem worse.

No.... an asp/ baton is an offensive weapon. If found in possession of one you will be arrested and processed. The legislation that covers this is S.1 Prevention of Crime Act 1953: "(1) Any person who without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, the proof whereof shall lie on him in public place any offensive weapon shall be guilty of an offence, and shall be liable-" Punishable on summary conviction by 3 months imprisonment or level 5 fine; on indictment by 2 years imprisonment and/or maximum fine. Section 1(4) provides a definition of an offensive weapon:- 'Offensive weapon' means any article made or adapted for use for causing injury to the person, or intended by the person having it worth him for such use by him (or some other person). Hence weapons become offensive in two ways- (a) Some weapons are offensive per se because they have been purpose of causing injury or have been so adapted (b) Any article which has the potential of causing injury is offensive if the possessor has it with the intention of causing injury In terms of a baton, it is offensive per se.

Basically , I think to use self defence as a legal defence in court your actions have to be a unplanned response to an attack, also your actions must be proportionate to the danger you felt yourself to be in at the time. Carrying any kind of weapon negates the unplanned portion of the self defence argument and I think that's why they are illegal.

Basically fight for yourself or run away. The Uk justice system rather put you in prison than protect you..am i cynical...yes

nope because of the softie government we have in charge-that is not to say all hope is lost. there are loads of things you can buy-its just a matter of knowing how to use them. when out and about carry your keys in your hand-if you are attacked the go for the eyes with the keys. a credit card (expired) is handy for slashing at the face. also carrying a small aerosol spray in your pocket helps for spraying in the eyes as does black pepper. if the assailant has a weapon-bottle or knife for example take off your coat/jacket wrap it around your arm and attack the weapon holding hand of the attacker while kicking or stamping on his feet/legs/knees and striking at the face with your keys etc if attacked make as much noise as possible. if you buy a magazine-fold it up very tightly and strike the groin and face area of an attacker with the edge of the mag-very effective . in the home you have kettle leads/chemicals (bleach ammonia etc) hot water all manner of things to help you defend yourself.
