Irritation to diaphragm and different things for different people. I always try eating a banana if they won't go away. Hiccups that last for days can be a sign of kidney failure, so should go to physician

I found this on the kids health website.
"Hic!" You've just hiccuped for what seems like the tenth time since you finished your big dinner. Wonder where these funny noises are coming from? The part to blame is your diaphragm (say: die-uh-fram). This is a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of your chest, and all hiccups start here.
The diaphragm almost always works perfectly. When you inhale, it pulls down to help pull air into the lungs. When you exhale, it pushes up to help push air out of the lungs. But sometimes the diaphragm becomes irritated. When this happens, it pulls down in a jerky way, which makes you suck air into your throat suddenly. When the air rushing in hits your voice box, you're left with a big hiccup.
Some things that irritate the diaphragm are eating too quickly or too much, an irritation in the stomach or the throat, or feeling nervous or excited. Almost all cases of the hiccups last only a few minutes. Some cases of the hiccups can last for days or weeks, but this is very unusual, and it's usually a sign of another medical problem.
You've probably heard lots of suggestions for how to get rid of hiccups, and maybe you've even tried a few. Holding your breath and counting to 10 is one way some people can get rid of their hiccups. Other people say that drinking from the "wrong" side of a glass of water is the way to become hiccup-free.
Putting sugar under your tongue might work, too. And maybe the most famous treatment - having someone jump out and scare you when you're not expecting it - helps some people wave good-bye to their hiccups. Boo!

Ur diaphragm is out of time with ur breathing due to an electrical impulse reaching ur brain incorrectly or slowly for some reason. Amuse ur brain n they will go away. Hence the reason for all the old wives' remedies of drink a glass of water while standing on ur head. By the time ur brain n body have tried to figure out how the hell ur gonna do that without drowning urself or creating a snot fountain, the hiccups r usually gone.

A spasm of the diaphragm resulting in a rapid, involuntary inhalation that is stopped by the sudden closure of the glottis and accompanied by a sharp, distinctive sound.
To stop them follow this advice it always works i swear on it...
Okay get a big glass of water, take a deep breath and hold it, and then drink the water slowly, keep drinking until you cant hold your breath no more, you will probably burp..but your hiccups will be gone :D

Just as your eye muscle twitches, or leg muscle twitches, this is your diaphragm (the muscle beneath the lungs which expands when inhaling and contracts when exhaling) spasms or twitches. You can hold your breath, jump up and down, eat a spoonful of sugar; those are all things some people swear by, but really you just have to wait for them to go away on their own.

I believe that is caused by lack of oxygen, and if you were to breathe into a paper bag, deep breaths, they should subside. It works occasionally.
