Hi Niki!! :o) I hope you're OK. I appreciate what you're asking. It doesn't really make sense - does it - that someone should fear God. [IF they believe in Him] But it's BECAUSE they believe in God that they fear Him. Those who do not believe [or worse - chose not to believe] are unwilling to acknowledge just how accountable they are going to BE for everything they say and do. And that's a pretty scary thought - if you ask me. But it should also be noted that the word 'fear' in the Bible also means to 'have a great respect for'. Imagine - if you will - that you have been arrested by the police and are standing before the judge. You believe in the judge. I mean - he's right there - right in front of you. But I would bet that you would FEAR what he's about to do. I think that sort of explains the type of fear people are talking about when it comes to fearing God. I hope that makes some sense. Have a great day!! Craig!! :o)

The fear of God is the sense of great love and reverence, it is not the fear of physical loss or punishment. You will have some feeling of this love if you behold a great beauty like the Prime Minister of Thailand when facing Miss Thailand who was chosen as Miss Universe, or facing a mother who faces gunshots in Iraq to protect her children. God is far more great than the beauty queen or the compassionate morther in many ways.
Only by living a religious life that people can experience the wonderful bliss of this awful contemplation.
Otherwise, nobody can be happy, because they are constantly fearful of evrything without knowing why. The proof is that they turn more and more to fortune tellers!

They are afraid because everyday they learn about God they fall farther from God. God is such a distorted misconception. They fear that they are falling farther away and that HELL will be waiting for them. Guess what Sheep? You for a second think outside of the box you already have earned a spot in Hell. So all will be going to hell it's funny though. HELL actually means Heaven. Guess they are one in the same. Just depends on how you look at it. Fire that burns or fire that comforts. You decide.

That has bugged me too. The only reason I have a sort of faith in God (although i don't feel religious) is that the god is good and forgiving. I would become a grade A atheist rather than believe in a god i would have to fear.

Because the Biblical God is a known homicidal psychopath.
If you believed a psychopath was responsible for your day to day activities, you would be fearful, too.
And, the psychopath murders indiscriminately, so there is no way to determine who or how many he is going to slaughter next.

Religion teaches people to be god fearing, in order that it can control them.

Because scripture says "The beginning of wisdom is to fear the Lord" so it is certainly very wise to fear to the Lord.
