My poor sister was in labor for 20 hours when she and the baby's vitals plummeted and they did an emergency c. bastard doctor wouldn't listen when sis said baby was stuck - indeed, poor dear's face was bruised and puffy. My sister almost died.

I took a clue from this and stayed the hell out of the hospital until I was 10 centimeters dilated. Each of my labors was 12 hours long.

Not that I could measure my dilation, but the first was born 13 minutes after I arrived at the hospital, the second an hour after (closer hospital!) I just feel that the longer you stay away from obstetricians during labor the better off you'll be. Use midwives, ladies - the docs cause lots of problems.

I saw a midwife through both of my pregnancies. Same woman every visit including delivery. She does not do ultrasounds but is able to feel the mothers tummy to determine the position of the baby, at every visit past 6 1/2 months. I was in labor for 20 hours with the first one, with back labor. She massaged my back, made me hot tea, compresses, hot baths, and everything. It was amazingly painful without any drugs but it was worth it to get that kind of care. My midwife has been delivering babies (outside of the hospital) for over 21 years. She has had only two emergencies where a patient had to be rushed to the hospital, neither of those resulted in harm to the infant or the mother. She has 5 kids of her own, and recently 'caught' her grandson. Its an experienced woman who you need to see on these matters. Not an obgyn who doesn't know what you look like till he walks in. Oh, and my hips are very narrow so my first baby got stuck, it took her less than 30 sec. to unstick her, without breaking her collar bone or giving me a gigantic episiotomy (both of which are standard protocal in hospitals).

I've had three kids - the first one it took two days of inducing labor to get to the point of delivery and was in delivery for almost two hours.

The second one was also induced and I was in labor for about six hours before both our hearts stopped and they had to take him by emergency c-section.

The last was a planned c-section and was the easiest of all. I was numbed up and done within an hour.

I always have to wonder why we keep going through this. LOL

My first was about 2 1/2 hours, my second was about 1 1/2. I have really easy labours, my daughter was born after less than 15 minutes of hard labour.

My first was a c-section. My second was 7 hours from the time my water broke. My 3rd and last was 20 minutes from when my water broke. YES, 20 minutes and what I mean by that is my water broke and 20 minutes later we were holdig her while she screamed.
