This is a question for an assignment at my Bible College. I am specifically looking for responses from people who identify themselves as either evangelical or pentacostal Christians, but I also welcome responses from non Christians. If a Christian could you please identify either evangelical or pentacostal on the post so I can compare responses. Thanks!

I describe the Holy Spirit to others as our empowerer and enabler to do God's will. Jesus said in John 16:13 that the Holy Spirit would guide us in all truth--namely the truth of God's Word. And if we are not empowered by the Holy Spirit to understand the Word of God, we in no way can comprehend it. But with the Holy Spirit's help--since Jesus described the Holy Spirit as our helper or counselor--we can be nurtured into spiritual maturity, which is what the Father intended for us in the first place. This growth and maturity is nothing we can do on our own. It's like the difference between relying on works to save us versus trusting only in salvation through grace by faith alone--is it us or is it God doing the work? If the Holy Spirit is not helping us grow and making us more like Christ, then we are likely just relying upon our own works to save us and we will be doing things by our own power and not by God's power.

I hope I haven't muddled this too much and hope what I've said makes sense. It's very late and I was just about to sign off and go to sleep but wanted to answer this question first. And for the record, I've got evangelical roots but am currently a part of a nondenominational congregation.

Relationship With The Holy Spirit

As I am wrapping up my time at Bible College (Calvery Chapel), I would be pleased to pass along some of what I have learned to help you along.

A relationship with any person, whether mom or dad, good friend, or husband or wife, will be defined by the two people relating. That is to say that the relationship is the meeting together of the two personalities. The Holy Spirit is indeed a person, the third of the Godhead. As a person He has likes and dislikes; He gets angry and sad, and He has emotion. Don Steward has a lot to say about Him, if you check out the link below.

All of these things being taken into consideraton, how do you relate to Him as this person? The same way that you would with any other person, which is through communication. you communicate who you are to Him, and He communicates who He is to you. You tell Him what you like, and He tells you what He likes. Of course, He is God, and so you approach Him with the reverence He deserves, just like you would any other king or ruler, except that He is a great King.

To describe this relationship with a non-believer would be very difficult, though you can try by bringing it to a level they can understand. Just like a human relates to another human through communication, we relate to the Holy Spirit through communication. The only real difference is the way that we choose to communicate to Him, since He is Almighty God and we are not. You can only relate with Him through the avenue that He provided, which is the blood of Jesus that makes you holy, so that you can relate with the holy God in the person of the Holy Spirit.

I hope that helps.

(Oh yeah, I'm a non-denominational evangelical Christian, or in other words, I believe the Bible.)

My relationship with the Holy Spirit... that's tough to describe because it has so many facets:

Comforter: When I become disheartened because there are so many people who wish to attack Christianity, like a warm blanket, the Spirit comforts me and reminds me that everything will be ok.

Guide: Even ministers become confused about how to proceed at times. The Spirit gives me direction when I need it most.

Forcefield: The Spirit protects me from attacks by bringing scripture to my remembrance, when I am tempted or threatened.

I could go on, but as I am neither evangelical or pentacostal, I will leave room for someone who is.

Incidentally... while I was ordained in the Baptist church... I don't consider myself a Baptist preacher... I am a gospel preacher and that's it.

Good luck on your assignment.

As a Christian i believe in the trinity made up from the daddy, Son and Holy Spirit and they are thoroughly separate beings yet one hundred% God and that i do not recommend there is 3 God's there is in elementary words one yet i do not imagine we as people can or are meant to are conscious of it yet as for the Holy Spirit it says that once you develop into kept through religion in Jesus Christ that the Holy Spirit is residing on your body and believe me that is literal no longer metaphorical because I truly have experienced the great skill of the Holy Spirit in my existence

Following the death and resurrection of Jesus christ. The holy spirit became available to all who accepted christ as their personal savior.

It is a believer's closest campanion.It guides,it speaks,it protects,it works miracles,it dircts,it comforts,it equips,it heals,it admonishes,it reveals mysteries,it reveals your calling/assignment.It also speaks through the word of God.

A believer without the Holy spirit is not a believer. For the Holy spirit to dwell in a person there need to be an enviroment free from filth.

Testifying the works of the Holy spirit in your life is the best way to explain your relationship with the Holy spirit to a non christian.

I am a non-denominational Christian who came to faith during the Jesus People movement of early 70s.

If I were to go back in time to the days of our early founding fathers. Imagine the difficulty I would have explaining the telephone. "What do you mean you can communicate with a loved one half-way around the world at the speed of light?" Such an idea would have to be taken by faith based on the account of my witness. Those of us who have grown up with the telephone take the technology for granted.

So it is with the Holy Spirit. "What do you mean you can communicate into another dimension--to the actual throne room of the Almighty God?" Such an idea is folly to those who have not experienced it, let alone grown up with it for many years such as I.

I must say, I too, like the telephone, take it for granted.

It is no different than getting becoming attuned to the spiritual side of your existance. Yes, Christians do it, but so do other religions, some better than Christians since we are more rushed and hurried and assume a lot more than we should.

My relationship comes from the time that I open my soul and pray to God and ask for guidance. If there is no response, then there is no relationship. I have had responses.

evangelical - The Holy Spirit is the third member of the trinity. Jesus said that when He went to be with his Father that He would ask the Father to send another exactly like Jesus in kind who would be our comforter, counselor, and teacher who would remind us of what Jesus the Word of God had said. The Holy Spirit regenerates a believer causing them to be "born again" or born of God and seals them unto salvation as children of the living God of Heaven. He gives believers spiritual gifts to be used in service to the other members of the body of Christ, ie all other born again believers. He also convicts people of sin.

As to how I would characterize my relationship with the Holy Spirit on a personal level, I can only use an analogy that will be flawed as all analogies are, especially those that attempt to describe the eternal living God of Heaven.

God is my Father and Jesus is my brother in a spiritual sense. The Holy Spirit is like a beloved servant in the household whose job it is, is to look after the children and educate them and help grow them up. He loves us and trains us and warns us and encourages us and is always there for us to help us even when we think we are out of his presence.

To summarize my relationship with the Holy Spirit into something that won't overload our computers:

The Holy Spirit is the 'lens' which focuses God's light (His Word) to clearly illuminate my path.
