This is for an assignment at my Bible College. I welcome responses from non-Christians. However, I am specifically looking for responses from people who consider themselves either evangelical or pentacostal Christians so I can compare responses. Thanks!

I'm just a Christian...no denomination........I guess I'm evangelical.

IMO the role of the Holy Spirit is to strengthen, lead, guide, and comfort a believer in Christ on their walk with God. The Holy Spirit reveals truth, wisdom, and understanding to a believer. He keeps us on the straight path of righteousness as each of us take up our own cross to follow Him. The Holy Spirit also blesses each believer with a unique gift all there own, for the purposes of building up the Body of Christ.

This is the main role of the Holy Spirit...to build a believer up in faith, truth, and understanding so they have the tools, guidance, and wisdom to go out into the world and build up His Church, for His Glory. In short, to be a shining light in the darkness, which is the world.

God baptizes a believer with the Holy Spirit only as a result of a person having total faith in Him. The Holy Spirit indwells a believer, which means God literally "takes up residence" in the heart, mind, and body of a believer. They are born again into a new person.

I don't believe some gifts such as speaking in tongues are relevant today...But I will in no way rule it out or say that it is not possible, as anything is possible with God. I just don't see the need...

In the Gospel of John chapter 16, Jesus tells us what the role of the Holy Spirit is today. It is to convince mankind of sin, convict them OF their sin, and lead them into all truth.

I would probably be tagged as a fundamental evangelical Christian.

I am a non-denominational Christian who came to faith during the Jesus People movement of early 70s.

Jesus said of the Holy Spirit that He would be a "another helper". The word in Greek is "Paraclete" which means "one who comes along side" (para, as used in parallel or parabolic). So the Holy Spirit comes along side of us to help us in our walk.

The Holy Spirit was also sent (in Hebrew marriage terms) as a "down payment" or dowery for marriage. In the biblical days, the daughters were betrothed to marry another. In order to solidify this contract, large doweries were provided as "down payments" until the groom comes to take his bride away in marriage. The Holy Spirit is our dowery from our Bridegroom until He comes to take us home to the marriage supper.

It's the Holy Spirit that draws true believers together as "one". I was at Disneyland, waiting hours for the fireworks celebration to start. It was difficult to find seating. One couple who had been waiting 4 hours were nice enough to give us room to sit. I struck up a conversation with them and was amazed at how wonderful a repore I had with them. I then found out that they were Christians and within minutes, we were having such wonderful fellowship--as if we had known each other all our lives. I was extremely bummed to part with them after the show was over, but we exchanged addresses. This has happened several times with me. They have been of other races, speak completely different languages, completely different dress and culture--yet there is something there that binds us together. It's awesome.

The Holy Spirit is grace personified, and he is the power behind every miracle, including the miracle of life.

The "role" of the Holy Spirit is to perform God's Word as the life-giving power of God. The Holy Spirit also operates in obedience to the Father (John 16:13-15). As a life-giver, comforter, and nurturer of God's people, the spirit's "role" is like that of the woman (John 6:63; John 14:16; Romans 8:11; I Peter 3:18). The woman also produces life in the earthly family and is a comforter and nurturer. Also, we know from Scriptures that the woman is the glory of the man (I Corinthians 11:7). Likewise, the Holy Spirit reveals the Glory of God (II Corinthians 3:18; I Peter 4:14).
The Apostle Paul clearly taught that we receive the Holy Spirit the moment we believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior. 1 Corinthians 12:13 declares, "For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body-whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free - and we were all given the one Spirit to drink." Romans 8:9 tells us that if a person does not possess the Holy Spirit, he or she does not belong to Christ - "You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ." Ephesians 1:13-14 teaches us that the Holy Spirit is the seal of salvation for all those who believe, "Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession-to the praise of his glory."When a person becomes born again by believing and receiving Jesus Christ (John 1:12-13; John 3:3-21), God resides in that person through the Holy Spirit (1Cor. 3:16). The Holy Spirit has intellect (1Cor. 2:11), emotion (Rom. 15:30), and will (1Cor. 12:11).

A primary role of the Holy Spirit is that He bears "witness" of Jesus Christ (John 15:26, 16:14). He tells people's hearts about the truth of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit also acts as a Christian's teacher (1Cor. 2:9-14). He reveals God's will and God's truth to a Christian. Jesus told His disciples...

"The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you." (John 14:26)

"When He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come." (John 16:13)

The Holy Spirit was given to live inside those who believe in Jesus, in order to produce God's character in the life of a believer. In a way that we cannot do on our own, the Holy Spirit will build into our lives love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Gal. 5:22-23). Rather than trying to be loving, patient, kind, God asks us to rely on Him to produce these qualities in our lives. Thus Christians are told to walk in the Spirit (Gal. 5:25) and be filled with the Spirit (Eph. 5:18). And the Holy Spirit empowers Christians to perform ministerial duties that promote spiritual growth among Christians (Rom. 12; 1Cor. 12; Eph. 4).

The Holy Spirit also performs a function for non-Christians as well. He convicts people's hearts of God's truth concerning how sinful we are -- needing God's forgiveness; how righteous Jesus is -- He died in our place, for our sins; and God's eventual judgment of the world and those who do not know Him (John 16:8-11). The Holy Spirit tugs on our hearts and minds, asking us to repent and turn to God for forgiveness and a new life.
