G'day Cornfed,
Thank you for your question.
The best thing is just to tell them politely if you know they smoke.. You can also get signs at home decoration stores saying please don't smoke in our house or words to that effect.
In any event, they should ask you before they light their cigarettes.
Regards

It is your house, and your lungs. I actually think that it is rude that someone would light up a cigarette in your house without asking first.
I would politely tell people that you would prefer that they did not smoke in your home. If they do not listen, be firmer with them.
Tips already mentioned sound good - ashtrays outside or stickers asking people not to smoke.

I tell people straight out that i don't like my house or furniture to smell like an ashtray so could you please smoke outside. As i am alergic to smoke and even the smell will give a instant migrain people have no choice but smoke and i also have asthmatic children. I would just tell it straight to your guests as your have the right to have no smoking in your house and if they are true friends they will respect your wishes.

I've never had a problem with smokers IN THE HOUSE. It's the ones in the YARD that annoy me. I end up reeking of their smoke and then get to hunt down their discarded filters once they've gone. Trying to ask people not to smoke ANYWHERE at your home is always a challenge.

Funny, you are concerned about being polite when they aren't.
You can put a sand fill container eight feet away from the back door. Decorate it nicely or find something that is tasteful and offer them the 'outside ashtray' if they ask for one. Throw all your ashtrays out or place them on a table outside. Smokers also have a habit of throwing their butts in the grass....(as if that isn't littering!)

I am an ex-smoker and most of my friends still smoke. The best way to get people NOT to smoke in your house is to mpolitely but firmly tell them that you do not like them smoking in your house.

You do not have to be polite about it, they can tell if you smoke in your home or not, just by smelling.
Out of respect they should smoke outside, if you have to tell them then they don't need to be there.
Hope this helps.

I just ask them to not smoke in the house, then when they step outside to smoke, I direct them toward the outdoor trash cans and remind them that they can put their extinguished butts in there. Nobody has ever been offended yet. People really appreciate honesty and directness.

I'm a smoker and if I go to someones home and there isn't an ashtray in site then I assume they don't smoke in their house.
If someone is bold enough to ask you for an ashtray, you can be bold enough to say, I'm sorry your have to step outside to smoke,
