I have been pondering over this question all weekend so must find an answer..... When walking the dog, who gets more worn out? The dog has four legs so can they walk twice as further as us without getting tired, or do they have to work harder because they have four legs which would make them tired faster?

A dog's lungs are located above his front legs. When a dog runs, the pounding on the front legs adds shock to the lungs. While the shock to the lungs is minimal, it takes it's toll on a long run. A person's lungs are further away from similar pounding.
Also, a human regulates his body temperature through his skin via sweat glands. A dog's sweat glands are on the pads of his feet. The only places a dog can cool off is through his feet and through his mouth (via panting). That's why a human is better suited to run a 26.3 mile marathon than a dog.

We definitely get more tired. Regardless of how many legs and walking twice as far...my Jack Russell still wants to play when we get in from a 3 hour walk - all I want to do is laze on the sofa!

I would say we tire faster. I work out regularly and used to be a marathon runner but i know when I got the dog out I get exhausted and he wants to go forever.

depends on how fit either dog or human is ... some dogs are so unfit and overweight they are bound to tire faster than human. Some humans are so unfit and overweight, dog is bound to outwalk them.

I think it's possible to wear out the dog if you are in particularly good shape.
