My Mum has varicose veins which were operated on a few years ago but are still bad. Yesterday when she was drying herself after a shower one burst and started pumping blood everywhere. I got her to sit down and I put her leg on a stool, put a clean towel on her leg and applied direct pressure to it. It stopped after about 15 minutes and she was ok after. She just had a small hole like a knitting needle puncture in her leg. She hadnt banged or scratched her leg off anything.

I want to know WHY this happened? Is it a sign of something bad. Is it likely to happen again? Also, should she consult her doctor? She hates wasting Doctors time and doesnt want to go as the bleeding stopped but it was really bad. I used 3 bath towels to soak it all up!

She's on asprin and medication for high blood pressure.

No joke answers please. This is my mother and I am very worried.

You did the right thing first aid wise, now you need to get her to a doctor.
There is a risk now she will develop an ulcer where the vein burst and needs treatment for this asap.
Tell her she is not wasting the docs time, its what he is there for.

When I turned 28 I already had been in pain, embarrassed, and scared of becoming pregnant. I didn't want my big blue varicose veins to get worse. The All Natural Varicose & Spider Vein Solution program was an easy read and easy to do. Within 21 days there was a big difference in how my legs looked and I can wear shorts without feeling embarrassed. I feel so much better with more energy and for giving me back a healthier body, and the legs that a 28 year old should have.

Never mind the doctor - take your Mother direct to the nearest A & E hospital - because in answer to your question - yes it could happen again at any time - these things happen at most inconvenient times and it just might happen when you are not there - the reason this happened is that your Mother's veins/arteries have become severely congested and need to be 'stripped' again. A GP is is no position to be able to help in those circumstances - only admission to hospital and surgery will (a) cure the problem (b) prevent it happening again - at least for a while.

You must see a doctor!
The asprin may have an effect on the viens and capillaries around the area that were stripped. It s possible she will be presribed an alternative to control her blood pressure and it is possible she may need to have her leg checked at the hospital

It is possible that support tights are needed

Information can be found here

but it is un-wise not to see a doctor

The rupture needs to be checked. She needs a venous duplex asap to check for DVT (deep vein thrombosis, the clots that can can kill.) But many varicosites bleed. She needs to consult with a vascular surgeon. I dont know where you live but techniques are much the same all over the western world. Check this website www.veincenteroforangecounty.com for more info on venous disease. (I work there)

get your mum to the doctors right away, they will be more than happy to check it out, they can administer antibiotics if infected, etc and probably send on to hospital to have it checked out so it does not happen again, aspirin is used as a blood thinner, thats why there was so much, your mum may need iron tablets but please let doctor see your mum. my mum had her legs done years ago and she was in agony afterwards, ok now though.

I don't know a lot, but I think you should seek immediate attention. Maybe they can take action before it worsens. They can also teach techniques and preventitive measures, if there are any. Also, I think aspirin is an anticoagulant, meaning it's a blood thinner. If she bleeds a lot, taking aspirin is bad becaus she'll only bleed more. Please get her checked.

bother the doctor, thats why you pay him. If it happened once it can happen again, she prob wont bleed out from a varicosity, but they need treatment.
