Birds of a feather flock togather. If you live in company of people using foul language you speak that language.
Anger makes a person lose his mind and his grammar. So what he speaks out comes as a " foul language "..
what with arrogants, drunks, addicts, criminals roaming the roads you msut be a master in "foul language" so that this language can be used against them and which they can very well understand..There are a thousand more reasons to answer " why do people use foul language". Unfortunately Yahoo will still give me 2 POINTS as bonus. So for the time being and from bonus point this answer is sufficient.

At school, we got told that swearing meant you had a limited vocabulary. I don't really go for that though - if I stub my toe and shout 'f#@$' it's not because I don't know any other ways to express my pain - I can think of a million others ('bother', 'dang', 'shoot', 'dash it', 'curses' etc). It's more that it's just a satisfying thing to say. Something to do with the sound of it and that it's associated with expressing extreme anger.
Simililarly, I don't call my boss a 'rotter' or a 'cad' or a 'mean old man' because those expressions don't carry the anger and hatred I feel for him. Motherf@er on the other hand, captures it perfectly.
Hmm, I guess maybe the lesson here is that I should calm down a bit and think more happy thoughts. But yeah, that's why I use foul language anyway.

i. Due to a poverty of expression: more expressive words don't come to their mind, in an emergency.
ii. Bursting out with foul language gives vent to the suppressed emotional tension within them, and they seem to feel temporarily in control, feel powerful. But it really shows they have already lost their cool!!

Usually to make a stronger impression, I think. When you stump your toe on a chair, is it a mere chair or is it a &*^% chair?
Of course, some people just have the habit. I know quite a few of those, who have talked that way so long they don't even notice what they're saying any more.

Because they aren't clever enough to come up with something more intelligent to say. I don't mean that for those who swear when they hurt themselves etc, I mean that for people who use filthy words in their everyday language.
