Because unlike animals, we do not only eat to survive but also for enjoyment. That is one of the reasons the snack food companies are so huge and most americans are so fat.

Animals eat only when they have to, and if you've ever watched a dog eat, they don't really enjoy their food, they simply swallow it, lucky to chew it half the time. There is no enjoyment in that, only the basic need to eat.

However, you are wrong on one aspect. Many animals will continue to eat even when they are not hungry, simply because food is available to them. Again, this is instinctual, because they do not know when they will be able to eat again, therefor it is better to stock up ahead of time and not have to worry if they can't find food later that day or the next.

Thanks for a good question.
